Softball Advances With 3-2 Walkoff Victory

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. (April 25) -- Assumption sophomore center fielder Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) laced an RBI double down the left field line with one out in the seventh that scored Katherine Mosca (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) from first with the winning run in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Southern New Hampshire in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.

In the first inning, the Penmen used a pair of hit batters and an error to load the bases with no outs before Assumption senior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) struck out the last three batters to end the threat.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Hounds got on the board with a pair of runs for the 2-0 lead. Senior shortstop Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) singled to right center with one out in the inning to score Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk).

Southern New Hampshire answered right back in the top of the fifth as Kelsea Cheney launched her 15 home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game up at 2-2.

In the seventh, the Hounds led off with a single and after a fielder's choice, the team had one out with Mosca on first. Robidoux, who was hitless on the day to that point, laced a double down the left field line that was chased down and fired to the cutoff man. With Mosca rounding the third, the throw to the plate was high and Mosca slid in under the tag for the winning run.

Lowrey picked up the win for the Hounds to improve to 15-7 on the season as she scattered five hits with 13 strikeouts, giving her 199 for the season. Rebecca Sherwood threw three innings of three-hit relief for the Penmen, taking the loss to finish the season at 5-2.

Offensively, the Hounds had two hits each in the game from Boris, Palumbo and Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy).

The Hounds advance to face No. 7 seeded New Haven on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at Southern Connecticut, as part of the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Chargers knocked off No. 2 seeded Adelphi on Tuesday afternoon, while top-seeded Southern Connecticut downed No. 8 seed Stonehill, 4-3, in 10 innings.
