Hounds Knock Off Top-Seeded SCSU to Advance

New Haven, Conn. (April 27) -- After falling in game one by an 8-3 final to No. 7 seeded University of New Haven, the Hounds rebounded for an 8-5 win over top-seeded Southern Connecticut to advance to day two of the Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship.

In game one vs. New Haven, the Chargers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second behind a two-RBI double down the left field line from Shannon Angehr. The Hounds answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs on an RBI single up the middle by junior Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) that scored freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name).

The Chargers put the game out of reach at 7-2 in the fifth behind a pair of two-run homers before the Hounds answered in the fifth with a single run on an RBI single by Palumbo that scored junior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk).  New Haven added a single run later in the game to account for the 8-3 final.

Senior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) took the loss in game one for the Hounds to fall to 15-8 on the season. Over four innings, she gave up five runs on five hits with five strikeouts, giving her 204 strikeouts for the season.

In game two vs. the Owls, RBI singles in the first inning by Palumbo and freshman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) put the Hounds in front by a 2-0 margin after a half inning. In the second, sophomore Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) launched a solo homer to left for the 3-0 lead, followed by two more runs in the third on a two-run homer by DiPilato.

A solo homer in the fourth and two homers in the fifth cut the lead down to one at 5-4, but the Hounds put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth behind a two-RBI double from Jalbert to seal the win.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) picked up the win in game two, going the distance scattering 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Jayme Larson lasted just three innings to fall to 20-3 overall on the season with the loss.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 30-16 overall, the program's fifth 30-win season under 15th-year head coach Ralph DeLucia.

The Hounds continue play at the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m., taking on the loser of the New Haven/Le Moyne game that will take place at 1 p.m. The entire tournament is being held at Southern Connecticut  State University's Pelz Field.
