Box Score North Andover, Mass. (September 26) -- Assumption College jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half and held off No. 6 nationally-ranked Merrimack as the Hounds stunned the Warriors by a 2-1 final on Wednesday night at Warrior Field.
Freshman Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) put the Hounds on the board at the 12:06 mark as she deflected home a shot from freshman Kiley Colucci (Gloucester, R.I./St. Mary Academy) for her seventh goal of the season and the 1-0 lead. Beatrice has now scored in seven straight games, tying a 14-year old Assumption school record set by Julie Lane in 1998. She also has 15 shots this season, with all 15 coming on goal.
The Hounds extended the lead out to 2-0 just 5:17 into the second half as sophomore Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) took a pass from Colucci and converted her seventh goal of the year to put Assumption in control.
Merrimack cut the lead in half as April Daugherty tallied her eighth goal of the season at the 50:11 mark, taking advantage of an Assumption turnover.
The Assumption defense, led by a seven-save effort from junior netminder Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional), kept the Warriors off the board for the team's biggest win in over a decade. Kerri Bergquist had four saves for Merrimack as they lost for just the second time this season.
With the win, the Hounds now sit at 5-5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Warriors fall to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Hounds are back in action at home on Friday afternoon as the team completes its non-conference game vs. Bentley University that was suspended on September 18th due to a power outage in the area. The game will resume at 5:45 p.m., with the score tied at 1-1 and the second 15-minute sudden-death overtime period about to begin. All student-athletes and other fans are encouraged to arrive by 5:30 p.m. as the Hounds look to end a 13-game losing streak to the Falcons.
