Hounds Earn Road Split at Southern Conn.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

New Haven, Conn. (March 17) -- In the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference openers for both teams, the Assumption College softball team earned a doubleheader split with Southern Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.  The Owls took game one by a 5-0 margin, followed by a 5-4 Assumption victory in the second game.

In game one, the Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Kaley Marden's RBI double thru the left side scored Brittany Bucko for the early edge. In the top of the third, junior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) got on with a one-out single, followed by a double to left by senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) for her second hit of the game. The Hounds couldn't capitalize though as Kelsey Cockerill got the Owls out of the jam.

Southern Connecticut put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth with solo homers from Bucko and Julie Muscarella, along with another pair of runs in the sixth to account for the 5-0 final. Junior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) took the loss to fall to 3-6 on the season as she gave up five runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Cockerill went the distance for the win, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.

In game two, Robidoux was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on an RBI double up the middle by Medeiros. The hit was the 200th of her career for Medeiros. Southern Connecticut got the run right back though as Bucko led off with a homer off Assumption freshman pitcher Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne). Assumption regained the lead at 4-1 in the fifth as the Hounds pounded out four hits and took advantage of two Owl errors to plate three in the frame.

Southern tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI hit from Alyssa Downs and a two-RBI single thru the left side by Muscarella. The game wasn't tied for long though as Robidoux launched a two-out solo homer to center to pull out the 5-4 win. Lattal picked up the win for the Hounds as she came into the game in relief of Underwood after 4.1 innings.

Yesenia Evaristo took the loss for the Owls as she was responsible for all five runs, just two of which were earned.

With the split, Assumption sits at 4-10 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play, while Southern Connecticut now sits at 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, March 19th as the Hounds are scheduled to host American International for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
