Hounds Pull Away For 10-4 Win at AIC

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. (March 26) -- The Assumption College softball team got back on the winning track on Tuesday afternoon with a 10-4 victory over American International College at Groff Field. Assumption played as the home team and batted last in each inning after the game was moved to Springfield due to unplayable conditions in Worcester.

After a pair of first-inning errors gave the Yellow Jackets an early threat, the Hounds worked out of the jam thru a scoreless first. In the second, AIC's Katie Merrill led off the inning with a double to right center, advanced to third on a groundout and came home on a sacrifice by Desiree Martinez.

Assumption struck back in the bottom of the frame as junior Kolby Davenport (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) launched her first home run of the season to put the Hounds up 2-1. Junior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) led off the inning with a single down the left field line, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on Davenport's homer to left. Assumption pushed across two more runs in the third from sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) as the Hounds led by a 4-1 margin after three full innings.

AIC's Steph Belanger pulled the Yellow Jackets within a 4-2 margin with a one-out solo shot. Erin St. Pierre eventually tied the game at 4-4 on a two-RBI double down the left field line that chased freshman pitcher Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) from the game after 3.2 innings pitched. Junior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) came into the game in relief for the fourth time this season and got the Hounds out of the jam at 4-4. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hounds loaded the bases with no outs behind a pair of walks and a bunt single by freshman shortstop Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven). Two fielder's choices and a strikeout ended that threat though to keep the game tied thru four.

Assumption regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Boris led off the inning with a walk and later came home on a two-out RBI single to left center by Moniz for the 5-4 edge heading to the sixth. Assumption blew the game open with a five-run sixth behind four walks and a pair of hits to pull away for the 10-4 victory.

Lattal picks up the win for the Hounds to improve to 5-7 on the season, while Elizabeth Habib gets the loss for the Yellow Jackets after going 5.2 innings with 10 runs allowed on seven hits with 11 walks.

With the win, Assumption improves to 5-11 overall and 2-2 in divisional play, while American International falls to 2-7 overall and is 0-1 in the division.

The Hounds are back in action on Wednesday afternoon at American International for a Northeast-10 divisional doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
