Clermont, Florida (March 7) -- On day four of the NTC Spring Games, the Hounds dropped a 5-4 final to Georgian Court in game one, followed by a 10-7 loss to Young Harris College in game two on Thursday afternoon.
Senior left fielder Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) got the Hounds on the board in the bottom of the first vs. Georgian Court as she launched a solo homer for her home run of the season and a 1-0 lead. The Hounds had two runners in scoring position with one out in the second, but couldn't capitalize as the game headed into the third at 1-0.
The Lions took advantage of a two-out fielding error in the top of the third and turned it into five unearned runs to take a 5-1 edge. Assumption got two back in the bottom of the frame though as Jalbert roped an RBI double to drive in junior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester, N.H.) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) closed the lead to 5-3. Assumption starter Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) settled down after the five-run third and kept the GCU bats quiet as the Hounds continued to rally and cut the lead to just 5-4 after fifth on an RBI groundout to second by senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk). That was as close as the Hounds would get though as Lattal fell to 1-4 on the season in the one-run defeat despite giving up no earned runs and striking out seven.
Jalbert was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the offense.
In the second game, freshman Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) took the ball for her second start of the season for the Hounds. Assumption got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI double by Jalbert and an RBI single from DiPilato. Young Harris answered back in the bottom of the frame though with a pair of runs to quickly tie the game at 2-2. Underwood quickly got the first two outs in the third before three straight hits for the Mountain Lions put the Hounds behind by a 4-2 margin heading to the third. Young Harris took control in the fourth with three runs as they chased Underwood from the game in favor of senior Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial). Hedge went 2.1 innings, scattering four hits and allowing three runs.
Trailing 7-3 after four innings, Assumption got two back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to left by sophomore Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and an RBI sacrifice fly from Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). Three Young Harris runs in the sixth on four hits put the game out of reach as the Hounds dropped the 10-7 final.
Katie-Jo Gentry picked up the win for the Mountain Lions, going five innings to improve to 4-4. Brittany Henry went two innings to pick up her second save of the season.
The Hounds pounded out 14 hits in the game, led by a 3-for-4 game from DiPilato and two runs batted in by Jalbert.
Assumption is back in action on Friday, March 8th as the Hounds take on regional foe Dominican College for a doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m. Those games will be held on Field 2 at the National Training Center.
