Worcester, Mass. (April 14) -- On Sunday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team dropped the final game of a three-game divisional series to No. 13 ranked Adelphi University as the Panthers came away with the 10-6 victory at Marois Field.
Adelphi got on the board first as Emily Dorko reached on a leadoff single and eventually scored on an error for the early 1-0 lead. The Hounds got the run right back though on a solo homer to dead center by sophomore Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy), her third homer of the season.
The game remained tied until the top of the fourth when the Panthers struck for seven runs, chasing Assumption starter Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) after 3.2 innings. Adelphi had seven hits in the inning, including a two-run homer to left center from Elizabeth Lindner and a two-run single to center from Megan Heiser.
Assumption got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle from sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name), along with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth by Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) as she scored on an overthrow back to the pitcher.
The game headed to the sixth at 8-3 in favor of Adelphi before a two-RBI single thru the left side by Heiser to stretch the lead back out to 10-3. Assumption completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with the third home run of the season by DiPilato, along with an RBI hit by Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and an unearned run from senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk).
Hedge took the loss for the Hounds, falling to 1-8 overall. Freshman Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) pitched 3.1 innings of four-hit relief, striking out one while allowing two runs.
Laurin Watts started for Adelphi, going three innings before giving way to Devon Kelly, who went the remaining four innings to improve to 13-4 on the season.
DiPilato finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs batted in, along with two hits from junior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central). Heiser was one of five Adelphi players with multiple hits in the game as she finished 3-for-4 with five runs batted in.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 9-21-1 overall and 4-8 in Southwest Division play, while Adelphi improves to 28-9 overall and remains atop the division at 10-2.
Assumption returns to action at home on Tuesday, April 16th as the Hounds host Le Moyne College for a divisional doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Marois Field.
