Briarcliff, N.Y. (April 20) -- On Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Southwest divisional action, the Assumption College softball team dropped a pair of road games to Pace University at Pace Field. The Hounds fell 9-0 in five innings in game one, followed by a 9-6 setback in the second game.
In the opener, Pace went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first behind a two-run homer by first baseman Natalie Gellos. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the third when the first three batters reached base safely. After an RBI double to left by Jeane Drury and an RBI groundout from Gellos made it a 4-0 margin, Assumption brought on freshman pitcher Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) in relief of senior starter Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial). Erin Wood followed that up with an RBI double to right center to score Drury and close the book on Hedge, who went 2.1 innings as she fell to 3-10 overall with the loss.
Pace ended the game in five innings with a four-run fourth to take game one. Wood and Samantha Garcia posted back-to-back RBI doubles to make it a 7-0 margin, followed by a two-RBI double to right from Lana Buchbinder to account for the 9-0 final.
Kelly Fisher got the start for the Setters, going five innings while allowing only one hit with three strikeouts to improve to 5-6 on the season.
In game two, the Setters jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead behind a three-run homer from Gellos and extended that lead to 4-0 in the third on the first homer of the season Rachael McMahon. Assumption got a pair back in the top of the fourth behind a two-run homer sophomore catcher Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) to make it a 4-2 margin heading into the bottom of the frame. Pace extended the lead back out to four at 6-2 in the fourth following RBI hits from Buchbinder and leadoff hitter Hana Wright, followed by a two-run homer from left fielder Katie Lange for an 8-2 edge thru five innings.
Assumption struck for three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth behind RBI hits from Crowley and freshman Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) to cut the lead down to 8-5 before the Setters stretched the advantage back to 9-5 in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore first baseman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) led off the seventh with her fourth home run of the season as the Hounds dropped the 9-6 final.
Junior pitcher Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor), making her first appearance since April 6th, falls to 5-10 on the season with the loss as she went the first four innings. Chelsea Shea went 5.1 innings for the Setters as she improved to 8-8 overall while giving up five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
