Medeiros Walkoff Caps Home Sweep of Ravens

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. (April 22) -- Trailing 3-1 entering the seventh inning of game two, senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) launched a three-run walkoff homer to right field to lift Assumption to a 4-3 victory to cap a doubleheader sweep of visiting Franklin Pierce on Monday afternoon.

In game one, the Ravens jumped ahead by a 1-0 margin in the first as Ashley Noke doubled to right field to scored Tricia Hansen. Hansen had reached on a one-out double to right center. The game remained at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Hounds struck for a pair to jump to the 2-1 edge. Medeiros opened the inning with a single thru the right side, followed by a walk by senior Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner).  After a sacrifice bunt from junior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) moved the runners into scoring position, sophomore Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) grounded out to score Medeiros to tie the game. Jalbert scored the go-ahead run in the next at bat as sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) reached on an error.

Freshman Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) got the start for the Hounds and lasted 5.1 innings before giving way to junior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) with a pair of runners in scoring position. Lattal worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts to send the game to the bottom of the sixth at 2-1 in favor of the Greyhounds.

The Ravens threatened in the top of the seventh and had a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. Assumption worked out of the jam though as Lattal flipped the ball home to get Alyssa Dolson at the plate, followed by a groundout to second to end the game.

Underwood picked up the win to even her record at 4-4 on the season as she scattered six hits with one earned run, three strikeouts and no walks. Lattal worked 1.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless play to earn her first save of the season.  Junior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) was the lone Assumption player with multiple hits as she registered a pair of doubles.

Jessica Wiley went the distance for the Ravens as she dropped to 0-2 on the season.

In the second, it was Franklin Pierce that again jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Noke singled to center to score Melissa Morgan.  The Ravens added a pair in the third as well behind another RBI hit from Noke and an unearned run from Hansen for the 3-0 edge. Assumption got one back in the bottom of the fourth as junior Kolby Davenport (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) doubled down the left field line to score Robidoux from third to make it a two-run game.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) reached on a one-out single down the right field line and was pinch-run for by freshman Christina Caira (Newton, Mass./Newton North).  Freshman Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) walked to set the stage for Medeiros, who launched her team-leading seventh home run of the season for the 4-3 win. The walkoff victory is the second in the last three home games for Assumption.

Senior Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) got the start for the Hounds and went 3.1 innings with three runs allowed before giving way to Underwood in the fourth. Underwood pitched 2.2 one-hit innings before Lattal made her second appearance of the day with a runner on second in the top of the seventh. Lattal worked out the jam behind a pair of strikeouts though and eventually earned the win to improve to 6-10 overall.

For Franklin Pierce, Rachel Allen took the loss to drop to 4-9 overall and she pitched 1.1 innings of relief and gave up two hits and the walkoff three-run homer. Moniz registered a pair of hits in the game as seven different Hounds posted a hit in game two.

With the sweep, Assumption improves to 13-24-1 overall, while Franklin Pierce drops to 6-26 on the season.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday afternoon as the Hounds travel to Le Moyne College for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The first game is a divisional contest, followed by a non-conference game in the second.
