Softball Splits Season Finale With New Haven

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. (April 27) -- On a sunny Senior Day at Marois Field, the Assumption College softball team split a pair of Northeast-10 divisional games with the University of New Haven in the 2013 season finale for the Hounds. Assumption rallied in game one for the 9-7 win before dropping a 9-4 final to New Haven in the second game.

Prior to the start of game one, the Hounds honored seniors Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial), Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) for their contributions to the program during their four-year careers.

Sophomore Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) got the Hounds on the board in the first as she looped a double into left field that kicked into foul territory and scored Jalbert from second. New Haven got the run right back in the top of the second as Brandy Dianno scored on a two-out RBI by Christina Gelardi. Assumption loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but Brittany Scott worked her way out of the jam to keep the game tied for New Haven.

The Chargers struck for four unearned runs in the top of the third, led by a three-run homer to right center by Brooke Fisher. New Haven added a single run in the top of the fourth and the visitors were seemingly in control at 6-1. Assumption came roaring to life in the bottom of the fourth and loaded the bases with no outs yet again. After an RBI single to right by Jalbert scored pinch runner Liz Morgan (Abington, Mass./Abington), Impagliazzo connected on a grand slam to left field to tie the game at 6-6. The homer was the fifth of the season for Impagliazzo, ranking her second on the team in home runs.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Assumption loaded the bases with no outs for the third time in the game. Sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Hounds in front by a 7-6 margin. DiPilato and junior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) later came around to score a pair of unearned runs to put Assumption up by a 9-6 score.

In the seventh, New Haven's Keri Tricinelli led off with a double to left center and was pinch hit for by Erika Williams, who later scored on a Lucy Francisco double to cut the lead to 9-7. That was as close as New Haven would get though as junior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) worked her way out of the jam for her second save of the season. Hedge went 6.1 innings, scattering 11 hits with seven runs to improve to 4-11 on the season.

Micah Stonesifer worked two innings of relief for the Chargers and took the loss to drop to 15-6 overall.

Assumption struck first in game two as well as the Hounds loaded the bases with one out before Medeiros scored on a bases-loaded walk by junior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). New Haven tied the game in the top of the second and did major damage in the third as the Chargers struck for six runs to seize a 7-1 advantage. Lattal started game two and lasted into the second inning before giving way to Hedge in relief. Lattal was responsible for five earned runs in her two innings and eventually took the loss to finish the season at 7-12 overall.

The Hounds added a single run in the third and two in the fourth behind a pair of hits, but came up short in the 9-4 final.

Nicole King picked up the win for the Chargers as she went the distance while scattering six hits and giving Assumption a lot of base runners behind 10 walks.

Assumption ends the season at 15-27-1 overall and 8-13 in Southwest Division play. New Haven ends the regular season at 34-12 overall, 15-6 in the division and advances to next week's Northeast-10 Tournament.
