Box Score 2 Waltham, Mass. (April 7) -- On Sunday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team picked up a split of Northeast-10 Conference non-divisional games with Bentley University. The Hounds were victorious in game one by a 5-4 final, followed by a 5-4 defeat in the second game.
In the first game, freshman Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season as she went five innings and scattered four hits. Senior Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) went the final two innings of the game for her first save of the season.
In the opening inning, sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) led off the frame with a walk and came home on an RBI triple to left by sophomore Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy). Senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) followed that with a single to drive in Impagliazzo. The Hounds extended the lead to 4-0 in the third on RBI hits from Medieros and junior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and added another single run in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Bentley took advantage of two Assumption errors and scored two unearned runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before falling short in the 5-4 final.
Taitz took the loss for Bentley, dropping to 3-7 overall on the season.
In game two, Assumption jumped out on top in the first on an RBI single to center by junior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) that scored DiPilato. Bentley scored in the second as Sanborn posted a two-out walk and later came home on a double from Tierney to tie the game at 1-1. Sanborn added an RBI double to left in the fourth and Thibodeau doubled to left in the fifth for two runs to chase Hedge from the game for the 4-1 edge.
A Robidoux sacrifice fly, along with RBI hits from Boris and freshman Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven), made it a 4-4 game thru six and the game held there til the eighth. After a leadoff single to center by Tarantino in the eighth, she quickly came home on an RBI triple to center from McDevitt for the eventual game-winning run.
Underwood took the loss, going 2.2 innings in relief Hedge as she allowed two hits and just one run. Kelly Ferris picked up the win, going 2.1 innings of three-hit ball.
With the split, Assumption sits at 9-17 overall, while Bentley is 8-16 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 10th as the Hounds open their home schedule with a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. with the College of Saint Rose. The first game of the twinbill will be the third game of the divisional series between the two teams, followed by a non-conference game in the second.
