Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 7) -- Senior captain Andrea Bates (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett) scored the game-winning goal with 58 seconds remaining in double-overtime to give Assumption the first-annual Catholic Cup title on Saturday.
The goal gave Assumption a 2-1 victory over Stonehill College in double-overtime, breaking a tie that had lasted for nearly 43 minutes.
Bates took a feed from freshman Emily Hill (Dedham, Mass. / Dedham) and finished on the left side of the net. Hill had burst down the right flank before crossing the ball to Bates who had made a cut at the left post.
Assumption had equaled the score in the 77th minute as tournament Most Valuable Player Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass. / Silve Lake) scored the game-tying goal, also off an assist by Hill. The freshman had carried the ball down the left side before centering a pass to Radomski, who found the back of the net to tie the game, eventually forcing overtime.
Assumption started the game with strong passing, which led to a few great chances early in the first half, and controlled play early. A few great saves by each goalkeeper left the score tied at halftime.
All-tournament team member Renee Trudeau got the Skyhawks on the board in the opening minutes of the second half with an unassisted tally, which had a chance to be the game-winner until the Radomski score.
Over the final seven minutes of regulation, the Greyhounds pushed the tempo and aggressively attacked the net, but couldn't get beat Stonehill goalkeeper Amy Wheaton.
The Greyhounds out shot Stonehill by a 15-12 margin, and Assumption was able to put 10 shots on net while the Skyhawks only managed to put five shots on target.
Greyhound goalkeeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) was again strong in net, making four saves to earn her second win of the season as Assumption improves to 2-0 on the year while Stonehill falls to 0-1-1 on the season with the loss.
The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14th as Assumption will play host to Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce University. The match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
