Women's Soccer Knocks Off #9 Adelphi in 2OT

Box Score

Garden City, N.J. (October 1) -- The Assumption College women's soccer team stretched its win streak to six as it topped #9 Adelphi on Wednesday evening, on the road, by a score of 3-2 in double overtime. With the win, the Hounds remain undefeated in the Northeast-10 Conference with an overall record of 6-1 (5-0 NE-10).

Freshman Amanda Arnold (Dayton, Maine / Thornton Academy) notched the game-winning goal for the Hounds just 1:22 into the second overtime period for her seventh goal of the season.

Assumption entered Wednesday evening's contest ranked seventh in the East Region while Adelphi (6-1-1, 3-1-1 NE-10) was ranked ninth overall in the nation. Adelphi had not allowed a goal all season prior to the match-up, ranking first in the country in goals against average (0.000), save percentage (1.000) and shutouts (1.000).

The Panthers struck first just over six minutes into the game, giving them an early lead. The Hounds were not able to respond throughout the first half and Assumption went into the locker room at the half down by one.

Assumption exploded in the second half, scoring two-straight goals to take a 2-1 lead over the Panthers. Junior defender Caroline Arnold (Foxboro, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) posted her first career goal just over 13 minutes into the second half off of a corner kick from senior Liz Manganella (Sandwich, Mass. / Sandwich). Less than four minutes later, Assumption took the lead on a high kick from senior captain Kelsey Imondi (Warwick, R.I. / Toll Gate), just over the hands of Adelphi keeper Sam Whitney.

At the 68:55 mark, Adelphi lined up for a penalty kick, finding the back of the net for the match-tying score that took the teams into overtime. The teams remained scoreless throughout the first overtime period, however, Adelphi dominated the offense, posting five shots to Assumption's one.

Just 1:22 into the second overtime, Arnold gained possession of the ball to the right side of the goal and launched a shot into the top right corner of the net for the win.

The Panthers outshot the Hounds 19-18, however Assumption edged Adelphi with 11 shots on goal compared to just 10 for AU. Assumption also held the advantage in corner kicks 9-7.

Senior Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) and Whitney each tallied eight saves between the posts.

The Hounds are set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, as they host Southern New Hampshire University at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
