Manchester, N.H. (October 25) -- The Assumption College women's soccer team topped Saint Anselm by a score of 1-0 on Saturday on the road, moving into first place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings. The Hound defense performed exceptionally well, refusing to allow a single shot on goal, while sophomore Emily Hill (Dedham, Mass. / Dedham) scored the lone goal in the win.
With the victory, the Hounds improve to 11-3 overall (10-2 NE-10) while the Hawks fall to 6-5-3 (4-5-3 NE-10).
Assumption struck quickly in the match, notching the game-winning goal just 2:41 into the first period.
After a wide shot from the Hawks' Alexa Lucci to kick off the match, the Hounds gained possession and took the ball down field. Freshman Nikki Sloan (Stow, Mass. / Hudson) sent a pass up the right side to Hill who was all alone on the right. Hill fired a well-placed shot between Hawk keeper Gabriella Primera and the right goal post for the scoreboard advantage.
After taking the lead, the Hounds dominated the offense in the first half, posting 12 shots to just four for Saint Anselm, including the last four of the period. The Hawks did, however, emerge from the first half with a 2-1 corner kick advantage.
In the second half, the Hounds posted five shots in the first five plays of the half. Two came off the foot of junior Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass. / Silver Lake Regional), who currently leads the Hounds with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists this season. Freshman Amanda Arnold (Dayton, Maine / Thornton Academy) and senior Liz Manganella (Dayton, Maine / Thornton Academy) also notched a shot in the series, both on goal. Arnold led the Hounds on the day with seven shots, six on goal.
Senior Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) tallied her fifth shutout of the season, her fourth in conference play, with the victory.
As a team, the Hounds outshot the Hawks 22-8. The Saint Anselm goalies combined for 14 saves on the day.
Assumption is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Southern Connecticut State for a 7 p.m. NE-10 match-up.
