Albany, N.Y. (November 14) -- The Assumption College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 final to the LIU Post Pioneers on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Regional Championships to end the season for the Greyhounds.
With the loss, the Hounds wrap up their 2014 campaign with a 15-5-1 record while the Pioneers improve to 15-2-1.
LIU Post struck first with a rebound off of a corner kick in the 35th minute of the match. The Pioneers' Susanne Vistnes launched the ball into the box from the corner where Morgan Miller took two shots. The first was saved by the Hounds' senior keeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) before the second found the lower left corner of the net to put Assumption behind by one.
At the half, the Hounds had notched just two shots to LIU Posts' 13. The Pioneers also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Assumption came out of the locker room in the second half with a boosted offense, coming away with a 7-5 shot advantage and four corner kicks.
Despite the offensive effort, LIU Post scored its second goal to lift the Pioneers to a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute when Julia Backman launched a shot into the far right corner. The goal was the last of the match as Assumption held off the Pioneers for the remainder of the afternoon.
Edgin posted nine saves on the day, bringing her season total to 109, first in the NE-10. Pioneer goalie Hreffie Agnarsdottir tallied just four saves on the day. Junior Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass. / Silver Lake Regional) led the Assumption offense with three shots, two on goal, on the day.
Friday's contest marks the end of the 2014 season, one of most successful seasons in Assumption women's soccer program history.
