Worcester, Mass. (November 4) -- Freshman Amanda Arnold (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) scored with just 1:08 left in overtime on Tuesday night to lift the Assumption College women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 8-seeded Stonehill College in the Notheast-10 Tournament Quarterfinal.
The Hounds (14-3-1) will take on No. 5-seeded Franklin Pierce in Assumption's first league semifinal appearance since 2005. The match-up will take place on Friday, November 7, at 7 p.m. at the Assumption College Multi-Sport Stadium.
Stonehill (8-8-2) struck first at the 14:54 mark as junior Meagan Elliott ripped a shot from 15 yards out on the right side that landed just inside the opposite post for the 1-0 Skyhawk lead. The goal was the sixth of the season for Elliott, who leads the Skyhawks in scoring.
The game headed into the halftime break at 1-0 in favor of the visitors despite a 12-6 edge for Assumption in shots over the opening 45 minutes. Stonehill had a chance to make it 2-0 with 8:30 remaining in the first half as sophomore Daniella Ganiaris lifted a shot toward the upper right corner that was knocked aside by Assumption senior goalie Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro).
In the second half, the Hounds threatened almost immediately as senior Kelsey Imondi (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) fired a shot just over the crossbar with 32:40 on the clock. Five minutes later, junior Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) launched a shot just over the crossbar, followed by a blast from the right side that went just wide to the left. Assumption tallied the equalizer with 22:55 left as the Hounds turned a corner kick into the 13th goal of the season for Radomski. Senior Liz Manganella (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) lifted a perfect ball into the box off of the corner and Radomski headed the ball in to tie things up, 1-1.
Radomski nearly put the Hounds ahead with shots off the crossbar at 18:50 and 8:35, including a header off the bar that appeared to nearly cross the goal line. With the clock counting down through the final 10 seconds of regulation, the ball bounced around in front of the Skyhawk net before Arnold got a foot on it, but her point-blank shot went high over the crossbar to send the game into the extra period. Assumption held a commanding 21-6 edge in shots in the second half, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
In overtime, the teams battled but it was Assumption that tallied the game winner as Arnold pounced on a free ball in front of the goal for the 2-1 victory. After the ball ricocheted off a number of players, including Stonehill goalie Jamie Block, Arnold fired home her 11th goal of the season to lift the Hounds into the Northeast-10 Semifinals.
Assumption owned a 35-14 advantage in shots on the day, along with an 8-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Radomski posted 14 shots overall, five on goal, while Arnold notched eight in the game.
