Clermont, Fla. (March 13) -- On Thursday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team ran its winning streak to three straight with a sweep of Mercy College in regional action at the NTC Spring Games. The Hounds rallied for a 6-5 win in game one, followed by a 9-1 victory in six innings in the second game.
In game one, the Hounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the third behind a six-hit inning. Senior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) led off with a walk, followed by a single from freshman Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill). Four RBI singles led to the Assumption runs, started by an RBI hit to center from junior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) that scored Robidoux. Junior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) singled to right to score DiPilato, followed by an RBI hit from senior Kolby Davenport (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) that scored Impagliazzo. Junior catcher Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) completed the scoring with an RBI hit to right that scored senior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner). Boris reached on a single to center earlier in the inning.
In the fifth, the Mavericks struck back with five runs to take a 5-4 lead as Mercy was led in the inning by a two-out grand slam from third baseman Megan Johnson. Assumption rallied in the top of the sixth as Colby roped a one-out RBI triple that scored freshman Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) to tie the game. Abad reached on a walk earlier in the inning. DiPilato put the Hounds in front for good with an RBI hit to right that scored sophomore Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) for the 6-5 advantage.
Freshman Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) went the distance for the Hounds in the win as she scattered 11 hits over seven innings while allowing five runs (four earned) with no walks and two strikeouts in 102 pitches. Brittany Serrao took the loss in relief for the Mavericks, going three innings while falling to 0-3 on the season.
Impagliazzo was 3-for-3 in the game, along with two-hit outings by both DiPilato and Boris. Each scored a run as well, along with two RBI from DiPilato that included driving in the game-winning run.
In game two, the Hounds fell behind in the top of the second inning as the first two Mavericks reached base in the frame. Jackie Couillard led off with a single, advanced to third on a double from Kelly Bentson and scored on a two-out sacrifice fly to right by Julie Gross for the early lead. That advantage was short-lived though as Assumption answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Leading the offense in the inning with RBI hits were freshman catcher Cassandra Schultz (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) and Abad as Assumption took a 3-1 lead. Schultz had an RBI single that scored DiPilato, while Abad had a two-RBI double to left to score Schultz and Impagliazzo.
Assumption posted a five-run fifth with a five-hit inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single to center by DiPilato. The Hounds also converted a double steal as Impagliazzo stole second and DiPilato came home with the fourth run of the inning for Assumption.
The Hounds ended the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Abad reached on a hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI single to left by Moniz for the 9-1 final.
Freshman pitcher Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) went 5.2 innings as she scattered five hits with one earned run to go along with two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) threw one pitch in relief, getting the final out of the top of the sixth on a fly out. Ware improves to 2-1 on the season with the win, while Mercy starter Jordyn Moquin fell to 0-3.
The Assumption offense had a balanced effort as Moniz, DiPilato, Impagliazzo and Abad all had two hits in the win. DiPilato, who is now hitting .500 for the season, and Abad each had two RBI as well.
With the wins, Assumption evens its record at 4-4 overall, while Mercy drops to 3-7 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Friday afternoon as the Hounds face the University of Bridgeport for a regional doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
