Crowley Homer Lifts Hounds to DH Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Smithfield, R.I. (March 29) -- A seventh-inning three-run homer by junior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) gave the Assumption College softball team a 4-3 game two win over Franklin Pierce University to earn a split of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Unplayable field conditions forced the relocation of the games to Bryant's Softball Complex at Conaty Park.

In game one, the Hounds took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to center by junior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name). Assumption had a chance to add to the lead in the top of the second after senior right fielder Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) led off the inning with a double to left center. After a walk put runners on first and second, the Hounds had a pop up to first on a bunt attempt, followed by a single to left center by Crowley as Boris rounded third on the play. Boris was eventually thrown out at the plate to keep the lead at 1-0 and set the stage for a pair of four-run innings for Franklin Pierce. In the bottom of the second, the Ravens used a three-run home run to left by junior Jamie Wiley to jump ahead 4-1 after two. FPU added four more in the bottom of the third, using five hits that included a two-RBI double to right by senior Ashley Noke for an 8-1 advantage.

The Ravens closed out the five-inning win with a pair of runs in the fourth as Wiley posted an RBI walk, followed by an RBI hit up the middle by sophomore Tricia Hansen. Assumption had six hits in the game, while the Ravens pounded out 14 hits in game one.

Freshman Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) took the loss for the Hounds to drop to 3-1 on the season as she went 2.1 innings and gave up five earned runs. Sophomore Mandi Adee went the distance for the Ravens, scattering six hits with one earned run to improve to 1-2.

In game two, the Hounds used a four-run seventh to recover from an early deficit to earn the split. The Ravens went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning before a two-run homer to left by sophomore Erin Wood that also scored Hansen for the advantage. FPU jumped out to that lead with a single run in the bottom of the third as Hansen scored an unearned run on a Hounds error for the 3-0 edge.

Heading that way into the final inning, the Hounds got a run back on a single thru the left side by freshman second baseman Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) that scored junior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) for a 4-1 margin. Impagliazzo led off the inning with a walk to get the rally started. After the run by Impagliazzo, Crowley homered on the first pitch of the at-bat for the Hounds as she put the visitors up 4-3 for the first time, en route to the one-run comeback victory.

Senior pitcher Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) went the distance for the Hounds to improve to 2-0 on the season, scattering six hits with three runs allowed (two earned) and 11 strikeouts in 30 batters faced. Hansen took the loss for the Ravens as she allowed five hits and four earned runs with two walks in seven innings.

With the split, Assumption sits at 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the league's Northeast Division, while Franklin Pierce is 2-6 overall and 1-1 in divisional action.

Assumption is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 1st as the Hounds travel to Merrimack for a Northeast-10 divisional doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
