Colchester, Vt. (April 18) -- In a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team picked up a road sweep of Saint Michael's College at Doc Jacobs Field. The Hounds took game one by a 3-0 final, followed by a 6-3 margin in game two to pick up the doubleheader sweep.
In game one, the story was Assumption senior starting pitcher Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) as she allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts while throwing just 75 pitches, including 56 for strikes. With the win, Lattal improved to 4-5 overall on the season. Laura McCormack took the loss for the Purple Knights, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in the complete-game effort.
Assumption got on the board in the top of the second as junior catcher Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) singled up the middle to score senior right fielder Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) for the game's first run. Boris reached earlier in the inning on a leadoff walk. The Hounds added to the lead in the third as junior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) doubled to left to score junior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name), who reached on a one-out walk. Impagliazzo later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by freshman Cassandra Schultz (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) for the final run of the contest.
Freshman Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) led the Hounds with a 2-for-3 game, while the Purple Knights had just two players advance into scoring position off of Lattal.
In game two, five Hounds had a pair of hits in a 12-hit attack as Impagliazzo had three RBI to go with two RBI by senior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) and two runs scored by Abad.
Impagliazzo got things started in the first as her RBI single up the middle scored Abad for the 1-0 lead. The Purple Knights took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single up the middle by right fielder Jessica Carroll for the early 2-1 edge. Assumption regained the lead again as Impagliazzo tripled to right center to score DiPilato, followed by a Boris sacrifice fly to center that scored Impagliazzo.
After Saint Michael's tied the game with an unearned run off leadoff hitter Greer Lemnah in the third, Assumption put together a three-run sixth to claim its first Northeast-10 divisional sweep of the season. Robidoux got the scoring started with a two-RBI double down the left field line, followed by an Impagliazzo sacrifice fly to left that scored Robidoux with the final run.
Freshman Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits with no walks and three strikeouts to improve to a team-best 6-3 on the season. Lea Gipson took the loss for the Purple Knights, scattering 12 hits with four earned runs (six overall) to go along with one walk and one strikeout as she drops to 1-8.
With the sweep, Assumption sits at 13-17 overall and 6-9 in divisional play, while Saint Michael's sits at 1-23 overall and 0-10 in the division.
Assumption closes out its three-game series with the Purple Knights on Saturday morning as the Hounds take on Saint Michael's for an 11 a.m. start at Doc Jacobs Field.
