Waltham, Mass. (April 22) -- Behind an 11-hit attack that included three hits by freshman Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill), the Assumption College softball team ran its winning streak to five straight with a 7-3 road victory at Bentley University on Tuesday afternoon. The win gives the Hounds a 2-1 edge in the three-game divisional series with the Falcons.
Assumption got on the board with two runs in the top of the first with a two-RBI double to center by senior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) that scored Colby and junior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy). Colby reached on a one-out triple, followed by a two-out walk for Impagliazzo. The Hounds added a five-run second inning to put the game out of reach with a six-hit frame and the 7-0 lead. Highlighting the inning was a two-RBI triple to center by Impagliazzo as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week finished the game with two runs scored and two runs batted in while reaching base twice in the contest.
Bentley got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out homer to right by Jackie Gauthier to cut the lead to 7-1, followed by two late runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 7-3 final. Third baseman Kelly Sanborn drove in the two seventh-inning runs for the Falcons with a two-RBI double to center.
Colby led the Hounds with a 3-for-4 showing, along with two hits each by junior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and Boris.
Freshman Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) went the distance for her team-best seventh win as she sits at 7-3 for her rookie season. Over seven innings, she scattered five hits with three runs, no walks and four strikeouts.
For the Falcons, Halley McDevitt lasted just 1.2 innings as she took the loss to drop to 5-4 after allowing four earned runs. Carly Taitz did not record an out while facing four batters, getting charged with three runs on four hits. Kelly Ferris went the final 5.1 innings for Bentley, allowing just three hits in a scoreless relief outing.
With the win, Assumption improves to 15-17 overall and 8-9 in divisional play, while Bentley drops to 17-16 overall and 9-8 in the division.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 23rd as the Hounds travel to Franklin Pierce for a single Northeast-10 divisional game beginning at 4 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
