Hounds Drop Doubleheader to Southern N.H.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. (April 25) -- On Friday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference divisional doubleheader to Southern New Hampshire at Marois Field. The Penmen took game one by a 12-0 final in six innings, followed by a 5-3 game two win to earn the sweep.

In game one, the Hounds were no-hit by junior Ali Maloof as she struck out eight and took advantage of a 15-hit Penmen offensive attack to pick up the win. SNHU scored six runs in the top of the third, along with five in the top of the sixth to highlight the offense. Senior Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) took the loss as she went 2.1 innings in the start and dropped to 6-6 overall. Maloof improved to 15-7 overall in the Penmen victory.

In the second game of the twinbill, the Penmen took a 2-0 edge in the top of the third behind a two-RBI double to left center on a 3-0 count by Lindsey Bolduc. Assumption answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame though as senior Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) scored on a passed ball for the unearned run. She had reached earlier in the inning on a triple to left center to get into scoring position.  The Penmen chased game two starter Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) in the fourth inning to give way to Lattal, who threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Hounds within striking distance. Oliva went 3.2 innings while allowing five earned runs to drop to 7-4 overall.

In the fourth, the Penmen struck for three for the 5-1 edge, but Assumption senior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) launched the solo home run to center to make it a 5-2 margin. A leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh by junior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) cut the lead to 5-3, but that was as close as the Penmen would get in the sweep.

Boris and Crowley each had two hits in the game, while the top four hitters in the SNHU lineup combined for seven of the team's 10 hits.

The Hounds fall to 16-19 overall and 10-12 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen improve to 26-13 overall and 15-9 in league play.

Assumption is back in action for the season finale on Sunday, April 27th as the Hounds are set to host Southern New Hampshire for a 2 p.m. Senior Day start at Marois Field.
