DiPilato Homer Lifts Hounds to Sunday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. (April 6) -- Junior third baseman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) lifted a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the ninth in game two as the Assumption College softball team salvaged a doubleheader split with a 4-3 extra-inning win over Pace in game two on Sunday afternoon. Pace captured the first game of the doubleheader by a 5-1 margin as the Setters finished game one with three home runs.

The Setters struck on the first batter of the game as Shelby Yung led off the twinbill with a solo home run down the left field line for the early 1-0 lead. Pace added two runs in the top of the third, including a leadoff homer in that inning by Lana Buchbinder that cleared the centerfield fence.  Yung capped the inning with an unearned run after earlier reaching base on a bunt single with no outs.

Pace extended the margin to 5-0 with two runs in the top of the fifth as Yung led off the inning with a single to right, followed by a one-out, two-run homer to center by first baseman Natalie Gellos for the five-run margin. Assumption got one back in the bottom of the frame as senior center fielder Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) hit a solo home run to centerfield to cut the lead to 5-1 with two outs. The Hounds loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs, but a double play and a strikeout ended that threat as the Setters came away with the victory.

Robidoux and junior first baseman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) each posted two hits in the game, while Yung led the Setters with a 3-for-3 game with three runs scored and one run batted in.

Starter Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) took the loss for the Hounds as she dropped to 2-3 overall on the season. Lattal went 4.1 innings, giving up six hits with five runs (four earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn./Vernon) worked 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits with two strikeouts.

Junior Caitlin McCann went the distance for the Setters, improving to 4-7 on the season as she allowed eight hits with one run, no walks and three strikeouts.

In game two, Assumption jumped ahead by a 1-0 margin in the bottom of the fourth inning as Robidoux doubled to left to score freshman Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) as Colby reached on a two-out walk. After the Setters tied the game in the top of the fifth on a one-out homer to center by Kimberly Duffy, Assumption regained the lead at 3-1 in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Senior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) took the 2-1 lead with an RBI single to left with one outs, followed by a two-out RBI single by freshman Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I./Tolman) that scored Boris for the 3-1 advantage.

Pace answered with single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings behind solo homers by Yung and Nikole Larm and the game headed into extra innings tied at 3-3. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, DiPilato ended the game with a solo shot to left center for the first walkoff win of the season for the Hounds.

Oliva picked up the win as she threw three innings of four-hit scoreless relief to improve to 4-2 on the season. McCann took the loss for the Setters, falling to 4-8 in 2.1 innings of relief.

Boris was 3-for-4 in the game, along with two hits each by Robidoux and DiPilato.

With the split, Assumption sits at 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast-10, while Pace is now 7-16 overall and 6-7 in the league.

Assumption is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 8th as the Hounds host Stonehill College for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
