Fairfield, Conn. (September 13) -- On a rainy Saturday night at Campus Field, the Assumption College football team dropped a 44-14 final to Division I FCS member Sacred Heart University in non-conference action. The game was the first meeting between the two teams since 2008 and marks the fourth win in a row for the Pioneers in the all-time series.

After Sacred Heart turned Assumption over on downs at midfield in the early going, the Pioneers converted the turnover into points with a 32-yard touchdown reception by Moses Webb with 11:22 left in the first. Webb pulled down the pass from SHU quarterback RJ Noel at the two-yard line and scampered in for the score.

Sacred Heart special teams continued to shine as the Pioneers converted a botched snap on a punt into seven points with 5:35 in the first. After the snap went over the head of Assumption punter Patrick Tyler (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth), the Pioneers took over at the Hounds 22-yard line. After a reverse by Webb pulled the Pioneers inside the 10, Tyler Dube eventually pulled down the four-yard scoring catch in the left corner of the end zone for the 14-0 edge.

Assumption got on the board with a quick scoring drive that was highlighted by a 43-yard reception by senior Kyle Jamerson (Georgetown, Mass./Pingree School) that got the Hounds down to the SHU 25-yard line. After junior Trevor Vasey (Cumberland, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) scrambled to get Assumption inside the 10, he found senior Eddy Frazier (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) in the back left corner of the end zone for Frazier's second TD of the season and the 14-7 margin.

After a 20-yard field goal by Sacred Heart early in the second extended the lead to 17-7, Assumption answered with a three-play scoring drive that was highlighted by an incredible 62-yard touchdown catch by freshman Sam Blake (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow). Blake caught the ball over the back of the Pioneer defender at the 35-yard line and outran a second defender on that side for his first career touchdown.

Sacred Heart added its second field goal of the game with 7:06 left in the first half as Chris Rogers squeaked a 34-yard attempt inside the left upright for the 20-14 lead. The Pioneers weren't done in the first half though as running back Sean Bell broke to the outside on the right and beat the defender to the pylon for the 18-yard touchdown and a 27-14 edge with 3:23 on the clock.

The first half ended on a 37-yard field goal attempt by SHU's Rogers which was just short as the Pioneers took the 27-14 lead into the half.

Using a long pass from Noel to get the Pioneers to the one-yard line midway thru the third, Bell finished off the drive with his second rushing score of the game and the 34-14 advantage.  Sacred Heart's Rogers made it a perfect 3-for-3 in field goals as he knocked home a 21-yard attempt early in the fourth for the 37-14 edge. The Pioneers added a late touchdown that was set up by a blocked field goal attempt for the 44-14 margin.

Vasey completed 11 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while James Ward (New Haven, Conn./Williston-Northampton) led the rushing attack with 49 yards on the ground. Blake finished as the team's leading receiver with 70 yards, including his 62-yard touchdown reception.  Defensively, senior Erik Abramson (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) led the team with a game-high 14 tackles, including 10 assisted stops.

For Sacred Heart, Noel completed 16-of-32 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a game-high 131 yards on 16 rushing attempts. Webb led the Pioneers with 85 receiving yards, while Dube had a game-high six receptions.

With the loss, Assumption drops to 0-2 overall and remains 0-1 in the Northeast-10, while Sacred Heart improves to a perfect 3-0 with three straight home victories.

Assumption returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, September 20th as the Hounds travel to the University of New Haven for a 1 p.m. start at DellaCamera Stadium.
