Clermont, Fla. (March 5) -- The Assumption College women's softball team put up a 17-hit showing in an 18-1, five-inning win over the Georgian Court Lions (0-8) in its first game of the day on Thursday, followed by another five-inning, 13-0 shutout over Millersville. Junior Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H. / Alvirne) threw her first no-hitter of the season in game two.

With the wins, Assumption improves to 7-1 on the season. The Hounds will play Wilmington and Ashland in a doubleheader set to begin at 9 a.m.

Game 1: Georgian Court 1, Assumption 18

The Hounds were led at the plate in game one by sophomore Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, RI / Tolman), along with seniors Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) and Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I. / LaSalle Academy), who each posted three hits.

Assumption's 18 runs are the most the Greyhounds have scored in a single game since April 6, 1995 when the Hounds plated 20 against Southern Connecticut.

Assumption kicked off the top of the first with a commanding eight runs to gain an early, substantial lead over the Lions. The Hounds batted around the order in the inning and first scored on a DiPilato single up the middle, which drove home sophomore Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass. / Shepherd Hill), who led off with a walk.

The highlight of the inning came when junior Christina Caira (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) ripped a single up the middle to drive in senior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass. / Usuline Academy), who singled, and junior Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass. / Fairhaven), who reached on a walk. 

With the score 5-0, Colby returned to the plate with two outs on the board and belted a double to center field, driving in Caira and sophomore Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass. / Amesbury), who walked.

Assumption increased the lead to 13 after the second, plating five more in the bottom of the inning. 

The Hounds opened the frame with two deep singles from Moniz and sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford), followed by an RBI double from Crowley. Crowley and Abad crossed the plate on a Colby single to right-center field. Colby advanced to second on the throw home, and to third on a fielder error.

A Clark double scored Colby from third before a DiPilato single down the right line scored Clark for the 13-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the Lions notched their first and only run of the game after an infield error allowed Kelly Hardlman to cross the plate. Hardlman reached base on a bunted single down the left line and advanced via a single and a fielder's choice.

The Hounds scored five more in the bottom of the fourth for the ultimate 18-1 final. Another Clark single and a DiPilato double plated three before Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass. / Hudson) and Abad drove in two more to finish off the inning.

Assumption closed the top of the fifth on a double play, turned by Abad, to end the game.

Sophomore Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn. / Rockville) earns her second win of the season in the circle for the Hounds. Oliva struck out two batters while allowing seven hits and just one run. She was replaced by classmate Nicole Harvey (South Berwick, Maine / Marshwood) in the final inning who gave up two hits and added one strikeout to the Hounds' total.

Offensively, Assumption tallied 17 hits compared to nine for the Lions. Five Hounds blasted extra-base hits on the day, all doubles, including Colby, Clark, DiPilato, Crowley and freshman Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass. / Leominster).

Game 2: Millersville 0, Assumption 13

Underwood threw a no-hitter against Millersville (0-2), claiming her second win and shutout of the season in the circle while tallying five strikeouts for the second time this week.

The Hounds got out to an early lead in the top of the first when a Marauder illegal pitch with bases loaded plated Clark from third for a 1-0 advantage. Moniz followed, drawing a walk to reload the bases, before Abad hit a single to right field to score Impagliazzo, who had also singled.

In the top of the second, Assumption extended its lead to three on a DiPilato single through the right side. The senior scored Colby, who singled up the middle to reach base.

The Hounds broke the game open in the top of the third, driving in five runs on four hits to get out to an 8-0 lead. With no outs and two runners on, Caira blasted a triple down the right line to score Duplease and Abad.

After Clark walked to first, Impagliazzo drilled a single down the right line to score Caira and DiPilato followed with another Greyhound triple to score Impagliazzo and Clark for an eight-run lead.

Assumption scored five more in the top of the fifth. DiPilato led off the inning with a warning-track double to left field. DiPilato scored when Moniz reached on error.

The Hounds kept the rally going, highlighted by two, back-to-back RBI sacrifice flies from Colby and Clark to move the Hounds around the bases and score two more.

Assumption completed five errorless innings in the contest while posting 11 hits. Offensively, DiPilato led the Hounds, going three-for-three, driving in three runs and scoring once.

The Greyhounds are set to return to action on Friday, March 5, as they face Wilmington and Ashland in a doubleheader set to begin at 9 a.m.
