Softball Drops Friday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, Fla. (March 6) -- Despite a three-home run performance by the Greyhounds, the Assumption College women's softball team dropped two games for the first time this season in a doubleheader on Friday against Wilmington and Ashland.

The losses mark just the second and third of the season for the Hounds who are now 7-3 overall, after a 7-1 showing to kick off 2015.

Three Hounds belted homers on the day including sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) and senior captains Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) and Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I. / LaSalle Academy).

Game 1: Assumption 8 vs. Wilmington 16

The Wildcats (2-1) got out to an early lead when a single to right field drove in Cambria Ziemba, who also singled, across the plate for a 1-0 advantage.

The Hounds threatened in the top of the second when DiPilato led off with a single through the left side, followed by another from junior Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass. / Fairhaven). With two on and no outs, the Hounds attempted to bring in their first run of the day, but the Wildcats retired three to end the half inning.

A lead-off homer over the center field fence from Becca Stanley in the bottom of the second increased the Wildcat lead to two before Kelsey Doherty ripped a double up the middle to score another, putting the Hounds behind 3-0. A two-run homer after a Greyhound pitcher change increased the deficit to five.

Back-to-back Moniz put-outs got the Hounds out of the four-hit, four-run inning.

The Hounds rallied for a five-run comeback to tie it up in the top of the third, sparked by a blast from sophomore Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass. / Amesbury) to the left-field fence. Shultz ultimately reached on error but scored on a hard single up the middle from sophomore Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I. / Tolman)

In the wild half inning, Assumption jacked two-straight home runs off the bats of Impagliazzo and DiPilato, driving in a combined three runs en route to a tie. The pair was followed one out later by sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) who sent a solo homer over the right-center fence to tie it 5-5.

The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the frame scoring two more to reclaim the lead 7-5 before adding nine more in the bottom of the fourth for a 16-5 lead.

The Greyhounds made one last push for the lead in the bottom of the fifth, adding three more runs for the 16-8 final. With just one out, Moniz struck an RBI single up the middle to advance two runners including DiPilato, who walked, and Impagliazzo, who reached on error.

Senior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) shot a two-RBI double to center with two outs before the completion of the game. Crowley plated Moniz and DiPilato on the play.

The Hounds tallied eight hits compared to 17 for the Wildcats while both teams committed two fielding errors apiece.

Four pitchers saw the circle for Assumption in the contest but sophomore Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass. / Hudson) takes the loss for the Hounds. She pitched 1.2 innings while allowing five hits and four runs, three earned. Serating-Ware also registered one strikeout.

Game 2: Ashland (OH) 11 vs. Assumption 3

Freshman Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) started in the circle for the Hounds in game two and completed all six innings. She struck out one batter while allowing just five earned runs out of the Eagles' 11. The loss marks Roy's first of the season as she now sits at 2-1 overall.

It was the Eagles (9-1) who scored first in game two on an RBI triple to right off the bat of Jen Moore for a 1-0 advantage.

The Hounds responded quickly, however, tying it up in the bottom of the inning on a double to center by DiPilato. DiPilato scored Clark, who reached base on a well-placed slap bunt toward the Eagle second baseman.

In the top of the second, Ashland reclaimed the lead on a three-run homer past right-center, 4-1 Eagles.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Hounds loaded the bases with no outs. Designated player and reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Week Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) perfectly placed a bunt down the right line to reach first and score Impagliazzo, who singled. Assumption reduced the deficit to two on the play, 4-2.

Ashland responded with a four-hit, seven-run inning in the top of the sixth to gain an 11-2 lead on two singles and a three-RBI homer off the bat of Moore.

The Hounds attempted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth with an Abad RBI double, but ultimately fell short with the 11-3 final.

The Hounds committed two fielding errors on the day, compared to just one on the Eagles. Assumption tallied eight hits, 13 for Ashland.

Clark and DiPilato both went 2-for-3 in game two to help lead the Assumption offense. In game one, DiPilato went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI, while Moniz finished 2-for-3.

The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, March 7, in the final doubleheader of their spring break trip in Clermont, Fla. Assumption faces Indiana (PA) at 9 a.m. before taking on Kutztown at 11.
