Manchester, N.H. (April 14) -- After dropping two games to the No. 18-ranked Penmen earlier this season, the Assumption College softball team fell to Southern New Hampshire on the road by a score of 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H. / Alvirne) takes the loss for the Hounds and now carries a 4-5 record on the season.
With the loss, Assumption is now 15-11 on the season, 6-7 in the NE-10, while SNHU improves to 19-5 overall, 8-2 in the league.
Underwood gave up three earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings while tallying one strikeout on the day. The junior was relieved by sophomore Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn. / Rockville) in the bottom of the third. Oliva allowed just one run on two hits in 3.2 innings, notching two strikeouts.
The Penmen got out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-RBI homer off the bat of Brittany Perdigao, followed immediately by a solo home run from Sarah Lavallee.
A line out to sophomore Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, RI / Tolman) in center field got the Hounds out of the inning that started out with an Underwood strikeout.
Southern New Hampshire added another to make it 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout before the Hounds responded with a run of their own in the top of the fifth.
Senior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) led off the inning with a foul out to the first-baseman, Erin MOrrissey, before sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) drilled a single to right center. Abad advanced to second on a wild pitch to reach scoring position.
Freshman Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) struck out to make it two outs with one on before senior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) singled to drive in Abad, 4-1. Crowley rounded first and attempted to take second on the unsuccessful throw from center-field to home plate, but was called out when catcher Jessica Torsiello threw the ball to shortstop Perdiago for the tag to close the half inning.
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and the Hounds were stopped in the top of the seventh, despite a two-out single to left center by DiPilato to end the game.
Assumption limited the nationally-ranked team to just seven hits on the day, while the Hounds posted three as a team. Both squads completed the seven innings errorless in the field.
DiPilato, Abad and Crowley led the Hound offense with one hit apiece. The Hounds stranded nine runners on base, compared to four for the Penmen.
Assumption is next in action on Thursday, April 16, when it hosts Bentley for a 4 p.m. single game.
