Worcester, Mass. (April 16) -- In its first game of the season at home on Marois Field, the Assumption College softball team claimed a 5-2 divisional win over Bentley on Thursday afternoon to improve to 8-7 in the NE-10, 16-11 overall. Sophomore Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) led the Hounds on offense with two hits, one run and one RBI.
Freshman Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) earns her eighth win of the season with the victory while notching her eighth complete game. The freshman allowed seven hits while notching two strikeouts to add to her season total, now 33.
After shutting down the Falcons in the top of the first, the Greyhounds got off to a swift start in the bottom of the frame with a lead-off double down the left line off the bat of junior Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass. / Fairhaven). Moniz moved to third on a fly-out from sophomore Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, RI / Tolman) and scored on a sac fly to right field from senior Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) to give the Hounds an early 1-0 advantage.
Assumption increased its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Abad led off with a double through the right side and was driven home by a sacrifice fly from senior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass. / Ursuline Academy), 2-0. Crowley was followed with a walk from sophomore Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass. / Amesbury) before an RBI triple to left center off the bat of sophomore Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass. / Shepherd Hill) scored Schultz, 3-0.
With two outs, Moniz reached on a shortstop error, causing Colby to score from third, 4-0.
The Hounds added another in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to five. Clark led off the inning with a walk, advanced on a groundout and a DiPilato single before being driven home by a one-out, Crowley groundout to short, 5-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Falcons cut the deficit to three, scoring two runs on a single down the left line and a Greyhound error, but that was all Bentley would plate in the game, leading to the 5-2 final.
As a team, the Hounds tallied five runs on six hits while leaving just four runners on base. Bentley posted seven hits on the day while leaving eight runners stranded.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19, as they travel to Saint Anselm for two-straight doubleheaders.
