(Worcester, Mass.) April 25 -- On Senior Day at Marois Field, the Assumption College softball team clinched its first playoff appearance since 2012 as the Hounds picked up a doubleheader sweep of Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 divisional play. The Hounds, who won the league tournament in 2012, picked up a 9-3 win in game one before following that with a 3-0 shutout to conclude the overall three-game sweep.

Prior to the start of the game Assumption recognized three members of the team that were appearing in their final regular-season home game of their careers.

With the wins, the Hounds are now 21-15 overall and 13-9 in the Northeast Division, while the Purple Knights drop to 2-29 overall and 2-19 in the NE-10.

Game One: Assumption 9, Saint Michael's 3

Sophomore pitcher Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn. / Rockville) pitched five innings for the Hounds in the win as she allowed just three runs off of seven hits and struck out three to raise her season total to 23. Oliva was relieved by junior Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H. / Alvrine), who pitched the remaining two innings allowing just two hits and one walk while tallying three strikeouts.

The Purple Knights came out strong at the plate, scoring a run in the top of the first off of a double to left center from catcher Sarah Murray to score Jessica Barnett. The Hounds answered in the top of the second after Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) walked and eventually came home on a swing from Christina Caira (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) to deep right center to score Menard.

The scoring continued for the Hounds in the bottom of the fourth when Menard sent the ball over the fence in left field to tally her fourth home run of the season. With two outs, the Hounds rallied to score four more runs in the inning. With Caira and Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass. / Fairhaven) on base, Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I. / Tolman) doubled to left center for a two-RBI hit. To keep the scoring going, senior Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) homered to left center for her second home run of the season.

Following a pitching change for the Purple Knights, senior Jess DiPilato (Wocester, Mass. Holy Name) singled to shortstop and Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop before Danielle DelGreco was able to end the inning with a strikeout.

The Purple Knights responded to the Assumption offense with a two-run inning in the top of the fifth. Following two groundouts to second base, second baseman Christina Brazeau singled through the left side and Barnett doubled to left center to send Brazeau and Barnett home.

Assumption kept the offense going adding one run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-3. A single through the left side from senior Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) started the inning off. Coming in to pinch run for Crowley was freshman Marissa Gifford (North Attleboro, Mass. / North Attleboro), who was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice as Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass. / Amesbury) reached first base. Moniz reached on a fielding error by the Purple Knights, ultimately scoring Schultz for the unearned run and the eventual 9-3 final.

Game Two: Assumption 3, Saint Michael's 0

Freshmen pitcher Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) pitched a complete game for the Hounds in the game-two shutout, extending her winning record to 11-6. Roy gave up just five hits and added two strikeouts to her season total at 44.

The Hounds tallied all three runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

After a scoreless two and a half innings, the Hounds got on the board in the bottom of the third. Schultz started up the offense with a hard hit single up the middle followed by a double up the middle from Caira that scored her. Moniz went to first on a walk, and Clark sent them both home with a double that got her caught in a run down. The inning came to an end when a high fly ball to centerfield from Impagliazzo was caught.

The remaining four innings were scoreless with a lot of defense from both teams and two strikeouts from Roy and one from the Purple Knight's Danielle Brown.

Four Hounds accounted for the five hits of the game including Clark, Impagliazzo, Schultz and Caira as Assumption wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the league's Northeast Division.

The Hounds finish their regular season 21-15 overall and 13-9 in divisional play.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 28th as the Hounds host No. 4 seeded Saint Anselm for a 3 p.m. start at Marois Field.
