-The Lead: The Assumption College women's soccer team won its second Catholic Cup Championship in three years with a 5-1 victory over Saint Michael's on Saturday, kicking off the season a perfect 2-0. Senior Paige Radomski (Kingston, Mass. / Silver Lake Regional) was honored with Most Valuable Player status while four other Hounds earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Senior Katie Bealka (Freetown, Mass. / Apponequet Regional) notched the Hounds' first goal of the game in the 26th minute after collecting a loose ball in the box and firing for a 1-0 lead.
-Just over six minutes later (32:54), freshman Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) took a shot from the outside of the box over the head of Purple Knight keeper Kaylee Sullivan to put the Hounds up by two.
-Assumption scored again at 69:27 with another shot from outside the box from junior Nikki Callini (West Springfield, Mass. / West Springfield). Callini was found by Radomski, who notched the assist.
-Saint Michael's reduced the deficit in the 76th minute when Sarah Williams took a cross from Riley Mitiguy and headed the ball past Assumption goalie Emily Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven). The goal marks the first scored on the Hounds this season.
-Assumption responded with two straight, one from freshman Ania Spina (Wallingford, Conn. / Mark T. Sheehan) and another from sophomore Amanda Arnold (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy), to clinch the wide-margined victory and lead the Hounds to their second Catholic Cup Championship in three years.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
-In addition to Radomski earning Most Valuable Player honors for her part in the Hounds' 2-0 start to the season, four Greyhounds earned a spot on the 2015 Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team:
-Amanda Arnold
-Emily Kuzma
-Ania Spina
-Jackie Tomasello
-Assumption outshot the Purple Knights 7-3 in the first half, 14-6 in the second for a total of 21-9 on the day.
-The Hounds also held a commanding lead in corner kicks, 6-2.
-Kuzma posted five saves between the posts compared to six for Sullivan.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-Bealka's goal marks a career first for the defender.
-Villemaire posted two shots on goal in three attempts, registering her first collegiate goal.
-Callini's goal marks the first as a Greyhound for the junior transfer.
-Radomski's three assists in two games matches her total number of assists for the entire 2014 season. She also collected three in her first and second seasons combined.
