THE BASICS

- The Lead: The Assumption volleyball team earned its first victory of the year with an impressive 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 victory over Salem International on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) had a team-high eight kills as the team totaled 37 in all to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Hounds trailed early in the first set, but reeled off seven of eight points to grab a 14-9 advantage. They wouldn't let up and took advantage of Tiger miscues to earn a 25-17 win.

- Assumption scored the first five points of the second set but Salem came back to draw even at 7-7, However, the Hounds scored five straight to eventually grab a 21-13 lead and take it by a 24-17 margin.

- The final set was back and forth early, before the Hounds eventually pulled away. They secured the matched by scored six consecutive points to push their lead to 24-12, before settling  for the 25-15 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption hit .409 in the second set and .295 overall while holding the Tigers to .000 hitting for the match. They also added 34 digs and six blocks in the win.

Individually, freshmen Zara Valez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) and Haller set the tone, combining for 15 kills, while Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) added eight kills and six digs while hitting .353.

- Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) was solid once again, dishing out 27 assists while recording seven digs, four kills and three total blocks. Classmate Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) led the defense with 11 digs.

UP NEXT:

- The Hounds return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Slippery Rock and Daemen in a tri-match.
