- The Lead: The Assumption women's soccer team fell in penalty shootouts tonight at Southern New Hampshire, after finishing regulation and overtime tied at 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Southern N.H. put pressure on the Assumption defense early in the game, as they forced sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) into numerous saves. On one occasion, Nason made a diving save that deflected to a Penmen attacker inside the six-yard box, forcing the Hounds defense to scramble and block a shot with the keeper out of position.
- Junior Ania Spina (Wallingford, Conn. / Mark T. Sheehan) found the breakthrough in the 36th minute for the Hounds. After sophomore Victoria Stowell (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) sent a corner kick into the box that found freshman Johnna Caporuscio (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Hills) at the front post, Caporuscio flicked the ball which the goalie punched out. Spina collected the ball and put it onto her left foot and ripped a shot into the far right corner of the net.
- The Hounds went into the half up 1-0 and defended their hearts out for the final 45 minutes. An unfortunate series of events led to Southern N.H. tying up the match, when junior Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) streaked up the right side of the field and played a ball across the box to Spina, who found the keeper out of position and shot towards an empty net. A Penmen defender hustled back and cleared the ball off the line, before Southern N.H. counter attacked and scored just a few moments later.
- Both teams had a few more chances but neither team could finish, leading to penalty shootouts. Assumption and Southern New Hampshire both made their first five shots of the shootout, before the Hounds missed their sixth, giving the Penmen a 6-5 win.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Assumption 26-10, and held an 11-2 advantage on corners.
- Nason made six saves in 120:00 of action, including a few aecrobatic saves.
- Spina led the team with three shots on goal
QUOTE FROM THE COACH: "I'm very proud of the way this team played, not only today, but this entire season. SNHU is a talented team and we hung with them, if not had a few chances to win. We played with a lot of heart, and you can't ask for much more than that. This stings, but we know what we are capable of, and look forward the future."
