- The Lead: Assumption opened its 2017 season in impressive fashion, coming back from a deficit in both contests on the way to a sweep. The Hounds took down down Salem International 8-1 and then scored twice in the top of the seventh to beat Georgian Court 6-4 on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPNED:
GAME ONE
- Salem International scored a run in the first inning, but the Hounds answered back in the bottom of the second. Senior Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) belted a three-run double and then was able to score on an Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) single for the 4-1 advantage.
- Senior catcher Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass. / Amesbury) pushed the lead to 5-1 in the 4th and one innning later Caitlin Mirabell (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) hit a triple to drive in Mazzeo for a 6-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the sixth with Abad and Clark on base, Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass. / Leominster) hit a double to drive in Clark and then Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) singled home Abad.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME TWO
- The Hounds gave up two runs in the bottom of the first and then two more in the bottom of the second for an early 4-0 advantage.
- Assumption fought back in the top of the third when Schultz drove a two-run single into right field, cutting the deficit in half.
- In the top of the fifth Duplease scored her second run of the game when Schultz was walked with the bases loaded. Mazzeo tied the game up as she scored following a Georgian Court error.
- The Hounds compelted the comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring twice for a 6-4 lead. Mirabell hit a sacrifice fly to send Menard home and then Mazzeo scored her second run of the night following a fielding error. Georgian Court put its first two runners of the seventh on base but the Hounds locked down and held on for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In game one, pitcher Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass. / Grafton) earned her first win of the season only allowing five hits and tallied eigh strikeouts. Clark, Duplease, and Menard each tallied a double and Mirabell recorded a triple. Clark led the team with 3 RBI's.
- In game two, Menard and Colby each recorded a double in the game while Schultz led the team with 3 RBI's. Senior pitcher Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass. / Hudson) pitched 4.2 of relief facing 17 batters without allowing a run while allowing three hits with three strikeouts. Roy came on in the seventh to earn the save.
UP NEXT:
- The Hounds are back in action tomorrow at 1:00 pm against Concordia N.Y. and then at 3:00 pm against Urbana University.
