The Lead: The Hounds earned a 4-3 extra innings win and then took the nightcap with a 3-2 win in seven innings to pick up the first two wins in the three- game series against Saint Michael's on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPNED:
GAME ONE:
- The Purple Knight's took the 1-0 lead in the first inning. Fallon Tierney singled to left field to get on base while a sacrifice bunt by Christina Brazeau advanced her to second. With two outs teammate Tori Rathwell singled to right field to drive her home.
- Saint Michael's added two more runs in the third inning. Brazeau scored off a single while Danielle Barbato tagged up on a sacrifice fly by Julia Sevigney to take the 3-0 lead.
- The Hounds scored three unanswered runs to even the game in the fourth inning. Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass/Amesbury) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford). Next batter Julia Mazzeo (Milford, N.H./Milford) hit a hard grounder to score Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass/ Leominster) while Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I./ Cranston HS West) scored on a single from Victoria Petrie (Malborough, Mass/Malborough).
- It went into extra innings, tied 3-3 and in the bottom of the ninth Mazzeo singled to right field to get on base. Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass/Shepherd Hill Regional) laid down a bunt and Mazzeo, who had a big lead was able to advance all the way to third. Colby beat out the throw to first and Mazzeo capitalized on a distracted defense to scamper home for the winning run.
GAME TWO:
- Assumption tallied the first run of the game in the first inning. Senior Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I./William E. Tolman) singled and attempted to steal second and after a wild throw Clark was able to steal all the way to home.
- Saint Michael's tied the game in the fourth inning. With two runners on, Danielle Markowski singled to shortstop which allowed Torie Rathwell to score.
- In the bottom of the frame the Hounds answered with two runs. Pinch runner Ally Hinojosa (Revere, Mass./Revere High School) scored off a fielding error and Mazzeo was driven in on a single from Colby to tally the game winning run.
- The Purple Knights came within one run after Rathwell hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, but Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson Mass./Hudson) helped the Hounds defense escape the game with a 3-2 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In game one, Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) registered seven strikeouts and only allowed seven hits facing 37 batters in nine innings. Mazzeo tallied the game winning run, a double, and an RBI while Clark and Abad each recorded a double and Schultz, Petrie and Colby each added a RBI.
- In game two, Serating-Ware pitched a complete game, facing 28 batters recording four strikeouts. Petrie and Colby each added an RBI.
