The Lead: The Hounds defeated Franklin Pierce 1-0 in extra innings on a single by sophomore Julia Mazzeo (Milford, N.H./Milford) and lost the night cap 4-0 to Merrimack to split the doubleheader 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPNED: GAME ONE:
- Senior pitcher Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) pitched a shutout through seven innings and Raven freshman pitcher Amelia Mamone did not allow a run till the bottom of the eigth inning.
- Both teams left runners on in the sixth inning. In the top of the frame Jillian Ostrander got on base with a hard hit ground ball up the middle. She tried to steal second but catcher Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) threw her out . Ashley Deyo also singled and was thrown out at second while Aubrey Bianco flied out to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame the Hounds had two runners on when Mazzeo doubled and junior Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) was hit by a pitch, but the Raven defense got the third out to force extra innings.
- In the bottom of the eigth inning, senior Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) opened with a single, and next batter Caitlin Mirabell (Shoreham, N.Y./ Shoreham-Wading River) reached on a sacrifice bunt and advanced Clark to second. Senior shortstop Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) singled to left field to load the bases, and Mazzeo ended the game scoring Clark on a single.
GAME TWO:
- The Warriors tallied their first run in the third inning. Samantha Waskowitz walked to open the inning then stole second. A single to right field by teammate Caitlin McBride drove her in to take the 1-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the fourth the Hounds had the bases loaded but Merrimack pitcher Megan Cook ended the inning on a strikeout.
- Merrimack added three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 4-0 win. McBride hit a single and on a fielding error, Haley Currie and Waskowitz were able to score. Megan Tenney also scored in the inning after she reached on an fielding error.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Against Franklin Pierce, Ware pitched seven innings facing 27 batters and did not allow a run registering one strikeout and kept the Ravens to five hits, while junior Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) came in in the eigth inning for relief and recorded a strikeout. Mazzeo led the Hound offense with a double and the game winning RBI.
-Against Merrimack, Roy tossed 6.1 innings facing 31 batters and only gave up two earned runs. Senior Courtney Oliva (Vernon, Conn/Rockville) faced three batters to relieve Roy in the seventh inning. Mazzeo and Menard each tallied a double in the game but the Hounds were unable to score.
