- The Lead: The Hounds earned two wins over the Skyhawks on Wednesday evening, getting a strong pitching performance in game one and then in the nightcap, freshman Kayla Peabody (Mendon, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School) hit a walkoff home run to take the second game 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPNED:
GAME ONE:
- Junior pitcher Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) did not allow a hit until the third inning and only allowed one run in the game.
- The Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass. / Leominster) started the inning with a single to right field and then Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) singled to move Duplease to second. Senior Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Duplease to third and Menard to second. Duplease and Menard scored on a fieilding error to take the lead 2-0.
- Assumption earned their third and final run in the fifth inning. After Caitlin Mirabell (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) walked, senior Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) doubled to drive her home.
- Stonehill got their only run in the top of the sixth inning. Erin Brayden got hit by a pitch to get on base, while teammates Cassandra Squeri and Lianna Jordan each singled to advance her home ending the game 3-1.
GAME TWO:
- The Skyhawks offense started strong getting two runners on base, but Assumption pitcher Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) was able to strike out Jordan to end the inning scoreless.
- The Hounds got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Victoria Petrie (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) hit a double, while senior Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) drove her in for the lead.
- Stonehill answered back with a run at the top of the fourth to tie the game 1-1. Brayden walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then scored off a single from Michelle Carbone.
- Finally in the bottom of the seventh, with two outs, freshman Kayla Peabody (Mendon, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School) homered to center field to win the game 2-1 and register her first collegiate homerun.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In game one, Roy faced 28 batters, registered six strikeouts and only allowed five hits. Petrie led the team in RBI's with two while Abad tallied a double and an RBI.
- In game two, Serating-Ware tallied a strikeout and allowed four hits. Roy pitched the final three innings earning two strikeouts and only allowing two hits. Petrie had a double while Clark and Peabody each registered an RBI.
