The Lead: Senior Cassidy Colby (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) led the Hound offense to a pair of clutch 10-inning victories over Southern Connecticut on Sunday afternoon at Bryant, winning the opener 6-5 before capturing the nightcap 8-7.
HOW IT HAPPNED: GAME ONE:
- Assumption took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman Kayla Peabody (Mendon, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School) scored on a wild pitch.
- Southern Connecticut responded with three runs in the top of the third. Sara Buscetto singled to start the inning and scored on a single from teammates Giuliana D'Arcangelo. Jodi Disanto registered a double to drive D'Arcangelo home, then Arianne Tedeschi also tallied a double to send home Disanto.
- The Owls tallied another run in the fifth inning. D' Arcangelo scored her second run of the game off a triple from DiSanto. In the bottom of the fifth the Hounds tallied two runs to make the score 3-2. Junior Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) hit a two-run double, scoring Peabody and Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford).
- In the bottom of the sixth the Hounds tied the game 4-4. Senior Colby singled to get on base while teammate Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) laid down a bunt to advance her to second. Abad singled to score Colby and tie the game.
- Each team registered a run in the seventh inning to force extra innings. D'Arcangelo hit a double and scored, while senior Cassie Schultz (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) scored off a single from Colby.
- Both the Hound and Owl defense remained impenetrable until the bottom of the tenth inning. With Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass/ Leominster) on second due to the international tie breaker rule, Colby hit a hard grounder just by first base to drive in game-winning run and end the game 6-5.
GAME TWO:
- Southern Connecticut took the lead 2-0 in the second inning. DiSanto scored on a wild pitch, while Arianna Medeiros singled to score Tedeschi.
- The Hounds answered with two runs to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third. Menard scored off a single from Colby and Schultz stole home on a passed ball.
- Each team tallied a run in the third to even the score 3-3. Southern Connecticut short stop BryAnna McIntosh singled to get on base and and then scored due to a fielding error. Assumption left fielder Caitlin Mirabell (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) tripled and scored off a single from Abad.
- In the fourth inning, McIntosh, Medeiros, and D' Arcangelo each tallied a run for the Owls to take the lead 6-3. In the bottom of the frame the Hounds countered with two runs. Colby belted a sharp grounder which the shortstop couldn't handle, allowing Duplease to cross home. Clark followed with an RBI single plating Victoria Petrie (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) to cut the deficit to 6-5.
- The Assumption defense held the Owls scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, while the offense scored two runs to take the lead 7-6 heading into the seventh.
- In the top of the frame Southern Connecticut staved off defeat with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at seven apiece. Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) ended the inning by inducing a groundout. The Hounds were unable to score the winning run in the seventh forcing extra innings.
- Southern Connecticut threatened in the top of the tenth, loading the bases with no outs. However, Roy got a line out and a double play to get out of trouble. In the bottom of the tenth, Clark led off with a sacrifice bunt to advance Colby to third. Mirabell then came through with a single for the game winning RBI.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In game one, Roy tossed all ten innings and registered five strikeouts while giving up 11 hits and five earned runs. Colby and Menard led the Hound offense with two RBI and a double.st
- In game two, Jurnee Serating-Ware (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) pitched six innings earning one strikeout, while Roy pitched the final 4.0 innings with one run and one strikeout to earn the win. Colby led the team in RBI with three and also registered the game winning run.
