THE BASICS

The Lead: The Assumption College softball team opened the day with a 9-2 setback against No. 19 Winona State and then fell to Cedarville 6-1 in the nightcap on their second day of the Spring Games.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was scoreless until the top of the second when Winona tallied five consecutive runs which was highlighted by a three run home run from Lani Van Zyl.
- The Hounds bounced back in the bottom of the third inning to score two runs. Junior Victoria Petrie (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) singled to start the inning and Abigail Duggan (West Roxbury, Mass. / Mount Alvernia High School) hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Petrie to second. Freshman Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H. / Salem High School) and sophomore Kayla Peabody (Mendon, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School) had back-to-back walks to load the bases. With the runners in scoring position, Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) hit a single to left field to score Petrie and Murphy.
- Winona answered with two runs in the fourth, followed by two runs in the top of the seventh, and shut out the Hounds the rest of the way to claim the 9-2 victory.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Assumption got on the board firs,t off a single from freshman Haley Drakoulakos (Lowell, Mass. / Lowell High School). Senior Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass. / Leominster) singled earlier in the inning and was put into scoring position. Drakoulakos found a gap in left field to send Duplease home.
- The Yellow Jackets tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Avery Humes hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Kaitlyn Woerner.
- The Cedarville defense shut down the Hounds for the rest of the game, while the offense tallied five runs in the fourth inning to come away with the 6-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- In game one, Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton), and Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) combined to face 35 batters recording three strikeouts and allowing 12 hits. Beaton led the offense with two RBI.
- In game two, Nowicki pitched four innings and faced 23 batters, while Roy faced seven in her relief effort. Drakoulakos tallied an RBI, while Peabody went 2-for-3 at the plate.

- Tomorrow the Hounds are back in action tomorrow to face Seton Hill and 11:30 am, and University of Mary at 4:30 pm.
