The Lead: The Assumption College Softball team went 1-1, beating Cedarville 3-1 and falling to Minnesota State Moorhead 5-4, on the last day of the Spring Games to leave Florida with a 5-5 overall record, the best record throughout this tournament in three seasons.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when freshman Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) singled up the middle to drive in Haley Drakoulakos (Lowell, Mass. / Lowell High School) who singled to right field earlier in the inning.
- In the fifth and the sixth the Hounds tallied two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0. Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H./ Salem High School) drove a single to the left side to score junior Victoria Petrie (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough). At her next bat, Beaton doubled to right field and was thrown out at third, but in the play, freshman Abigail Duggan (West Roxbury, Mass. / Mount Alvernia High School) scored.
- In the bottom of the frame, Cedarville loaded the bases with no outs and scored a run when Kaitlyn Woener hit a deep pop fly to all Danae Fields tag and score. Senior pitcher Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) got out of the inning without allowing a run and shut down the offense in the seventh to earn the 3-1 win.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Assumption jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Murphy was able to take three bases on a sacrifice bunt from Drakoulakos.
- Moorhead tallied the next two runs in the second and third innings to take the 2-1 lead for the first time in the contest. Assumption answered in the bottom of the frame as Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston HS West) scored off a single to right field from Julia Mazzeo (Milford, N.H./Milford) to tie the game 2-2.
- After holding the Dragons scoreless in the top of the fourth, the Hounds added two runs in the bottom of the inning to take back the 4-2 lead. Murphy scored on a defensive error, and Beaton drove in her third RBI of the day.
- In the top of the fifth, Assumption gave up three runs to Moorhead including the eventual game-winner. Madison Paige tallied two RBI while Taylor Roddie added the other to end the game 5-4. In the Hounds final two innings, the offense was unable to connect for a game-tying run as Moorehead escaped with the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- In game one, Roy only allowed one run in seven innings pitched with two strikeouts. Beaton led the offense with a double and two RBI
- In game two, Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) and Roy combined for four strikeouts facing 30 batters. Drakoulakos, Peabody, beaton, and Mazzeo each recorded an RBI.
