The Lead: The Assumption College Softball team beat Bentley 6-2 on the road in the opener, but then fell 8-6 in the night cap as they served as the home team for both games in their split Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE:
- The Hounds tallied two runs in the top of the first inning to take the 2-0 lead as freshman Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H./Salem) made it around the bases on errors by Bentley, and then senior Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) hit a solo home run to tie the game. Bentley matched the score 2-2 in the bottom of the frame as Noons hit a double with two runners on.
- The Hounds took a commanding 5-2 lead in the second inning. Junior Victoria Petrie (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) was hit by a pitch and Julia Mazzeo (Milford, N.H. / Milford) singled to advance her to second. Murphy followed with a single, and with the bases loaded Haley Drakoulakos (Lowell, Mass. / Lowell High School) tripled to left field to clear the runners.
- Senior Nicole Duplease (Leominster, Mass. / Leominster) extended the lead to 6-2 in the third inning as she singled to left field to drive in sophomore Kayla Peabody (Mendon, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional High School) who singled earlier in the frame. Kendal Roy (Grafton Mass. / Grafton HS) did the rest in keeping the Falcons off the board the rest of the way.
GAME TWO:
- The Assumption offense continued into the second game as Menard doubled to drive in Drakoulakos and then Peabody singled to bring home Menard for a 2-0 lead in the first.
- The Hounds added four more runs in the third inning as junior Caitlin Mirabell (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) hit a two RBI single followed by a two-run home run from Petrie for a 6-0 advantage in the contest.
- Bentley got on the board with three in the fourth and then scored one more in the fifth to trail 6-4. The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the sixth for a 7-6 lead and then added one more in the seventh while holding the Hounds scoreless to secure the 8-6 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- In game one, Roy tossed seven innings, faced 31 batters and recorded two strikeouts. Drakoulakos led the offense with three RBI while Menard added a home run and Duplease tallied an RBI.
- In game two, Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Mary's Lynn) and Roy combined for three strikeouts and six earned runs, as Nowicki started and pitched the first 4.2 innings before giving way to Roy. Each allowed three earned runs and gave up nine hits in total. Mirabell and Petrie each tallied two RBI.
