THE LEAD: The Assumption women's soccer team continued their 2021 season on senior day at home with a win over Saint Mike's in an NE10 conference matchup. The Hounds dominated all game with senior Diana Bruggeman being involved in all four goals. Assumption scored two goals in each half while also putting 10 shots up in each half, keeping the visitors busy all night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Hounds scored first when they won a Penalty Kick in the 30th minute, senior captain Diana Bruggeman (Natick, Mass. / Natick) stepped up to take the kick and buried it into the left side of the net to give Assumption the 1-0 lead.
-In the 19th minute Assumption added to their lead when Annie Irwin (Norwood, Mass. / Montrose School) found the ball in the Saint Mikes half and played a ball on the right side to Jordan Adducci (Wethersfield, Conn. / Wethersfield) who sped past the Purple Knights defense and played a ball into the box that found Bruggeman who was able to guide it into the net for her second goal of the night.
-Annie Irwin tacked on a third Assumption goal in the 78th minute off a give and go pass with Bruggeman on the left side, Irwin then cut inside and fired a shot from a tough angle and into the top left corner for a 3-0 lead.
-The Hounds scored their fourth goal of the night when Ama Astiasaran (Glastonbury, Conn.) took a pass on the left side from Bruggeman and fired a low shot into the left corner and off the post and in.
-The Purple Knights got on the scoresheet with three minutes left in the game when they won a penalty kick. Izzy Ruprecht stepped up and fired a shot down the middle to create the 4-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Assumption registered 20 shots on the night with 13 of them being on goal. Saint Mikes put up nine shots on the night with four on goal.
-Julia Walsh (San Diego, Calif.) made three saves on the night while Escobedo was kept busy all night making nine saves.
-The Hounds took seven corners on the night while the Purple Knights won two.
