- The Lead: The Assumption University softball team opened up the 2021 season with a pair of victories over the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen on Thursday evening. The Hounds scored four runs in each game and finished with 15 total hits en route to the 2-0 start.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE (Assumption 4, SNHU 1)
-Assumption wasted no time hopping on the scoreboard, putting up a run in the top of the first inning. Senior Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H. / Salem High School) put herself in scoring position as she stole second base after getting walked. Senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) moved her over to third with a double to left field and her classmate, Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy) earned an RBI as she laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Murphy (1-0).
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) struck out her first batter of the 2021 season and the next two batters flew out to put the Hounds back up at the plate. Assumption put two runners on base in the top of the second, but SNHU clinched the third out to hold the game at 1-0.
-The Penmen tied the game at one in the bottom of the second. First year Bella Dickinson earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored her classmate Ari Ferrier. Ferrier came in as a pinch runner after junior Emily Carbonneau led off with a walk.
-The Hounds tallied their final runs of game one in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) led off with a monster triple to left field, and with two outs on the scoreboard, she stole home (2-1). Beaton got into scoring position, stealing second base behind Dwyer.
-Senior Mckenzie Richards (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East) singled to right field to send Beaton and first year Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass. / Abington) across home plate for the final 4-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Beaton finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored. Bialakis went 1-for-2 with one RBI and Richards went 1-for-1 with one RBI. The Hounds finished with seven total hits in game one.
-First year Shannon Gifford went 2-for-3 at the plate for SNHU as the hosts finished the day with five hits.
-Nowicki improves to 1-0 on the season as she went all seven innings and struck out five batters.
-Senior Olivia Strasser falls to 0-1 on the mound for the Penmen. She struck out four batters in the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO (Assumption 4, Southern N.H. 2)
-The Penmen were the first to put runs on the scoreboard in game two. After a pair of walks, with two outs in the bottom of the first, senior Chloe Griffin put an RBI single in right field to score first year Alyssa Dimauro. Griffin ultimately crossed home after two wild pitches to take the 2-0 lead.
-Assumption came back with a run in the top of the third. Dwyer led off with a single to right field and made her way to second on an error by the Penmen. After a sacrifice bunt by Richards put Dwyer on third, Beaton singled to center field to send Dwyer home (2-1).
-After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Hounds took over the lead in the top of the sixth. Richards kicked things off with a single to right field and Beaton tied the game with an RBI double to left field (2-2). Bialakis moved Beaton to third with a sacrifice bunt and Mahan earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field, for the lead (3-2).
-The Hounds added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when first year Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) doubled to left and crossed home on an error by SNHU (4-2).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Beaton led the Hounds at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Richards finished 2-for-2 and Dwyer went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Assumption finished game two with eight total hits. Beaton and Larson both had doubles in the game.
-Griffin led SNHU going 2-for-3 with one RBI in the loss. The Penmen had three hits.
-Junior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) earned the victory on the mound for Assumption and improves to 1-0 on the season. She pitched seven innings and struck out two batters.
-Griffin falls to 0-1 on the season. She went all seven innings and struck out two batters.

-Assumption is set to take on Franklin Pierce at home on Thursday, April 1st. The doubleheader kicks off at 3:00 p.m.
