-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team took two victories over the Skyhawks of Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds put up 10 hits and 11 runs in game two to secure the sweep.
Game #1: Assumption 6, Stonehill 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) led off with a single to third base and stole second. Senior Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H. / Salem High School) reached on an error by the Skyhawks and Dwyer moved to third. Senior Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy) earned two RBIs when she singled to left field to send Dwyer and Murphy home for the 2-0 lead.
-First year Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) homered in the bottom of the second inning to extend Assumption's lead to 4-0.
-Senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) doubled in the bottom of the third and came home on an RBI single to right by senior Mckenzie Richards (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East) (5-0).
-Stonehill got a run back in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to left by sophomore Molly Adamo that scored senior Michelle Theilgard (5-1).
-The Hounds added one more run in the bottom of the sixth and the Skyhawks put across two runs in the top of the seventh, before Assumption clinched the 6-3 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Larson led Assumption at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Dwyer finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and Bialakis went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) improves to 3-2 on the season. She pitched 5.2 innings for the Hounds and struck out three batters.
-Senior Julia Perrone falls to 0-2 in the circle for the Skyhawks. She pitched three innings.
-Theilgard led Stonehill going 3-for-3 with one run scored.
-Assumption finished game one with eight hits while Stonehill put up six.
Game #2: Assumption 11, Stonehill 1 (5 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption started scoring with a two RBI double to left field by first year Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) in the bottom of the second inning.
-The Hounds erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third. Murphy led off, reaching on an error by the Skyhawks and stole second. Beaton moved her to third with a single to second base and stole second to put herself in scoring position. Bialakis earned an RBI when she reached on a fielder's choice and Murphy crossed home. Richards also earned an RBI with a single to left that scored Beaton. First year Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass. / Abington) singled to left to score Bialakis, Geremia doubled to left to score Mahan and Dwyer singled to center to score Geremia (8-0). Dwyer scored on a wild pitch for the 9-0 lead at the end of the third. The Hounds finished the third inning with six hits.
-Stonehill got one run back in the top of the fourth, but the Hounds used two more runs in the bottom of the inning to claim the 11-1 final in five. Mahan and first year Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) both put up RBIs in the fourth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Mahan led the Hounds going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
-Junior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) earned the win in the circle for Assumption. She pitched all five innings and struck out one batter. She improves to 3-1 on the season.
-Sophomore Kelly Mayette falls to 2-3 on the season. She pitched 2.2 innings for the Skyhawks.
-Assumption put up 10 hits in game two and allowed just two hits by Stonehill.
