-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team fell to the Hawks of Saint Anselm College in a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games, on the road, on Tuesday evening. The Hounds battled to a 4-2 setback in game one before Saint Anselm held them to just four hits in game two to secure the sweep.
Game #1: Saint Anselm 4, Assumption 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hawks used three hits and three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead over the Hounds.
-With one out on the board, sophomore Kylie Fitzpatrick doubled down the left field line to get the ball rolling for the hosts. First year Gracie O'Hara put Fitzpatrick on third with a single through the left side and got into scoring position when she stole second. Junior Bre Klaiber walked to load the bases before senior Lauren Washburn singled to left center for two RBIs, scoring Fitzpatrick and O'Hara. Senior Erin Thompson reached on a fielder's choice and Klaiber crossed home for the 3-0 edge after one.
-After three and a half scoreless innings, Saint Anselm added their fourth and final run on a homer to centerfield by O'Hara (4-0).
-Assumption saw their bid at a comeback in the top of the sixth when senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) put a two-run homerun over the left center field fence (4-2). This was as close as they would come as the Hawks had a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to secure the 4-2 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Beaton led the Hounds at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) and senior Mckenzie Richards (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East) both went 2-for-4 in the setback for Assumption. The Hounds finished game one with nine hits.
-O'Hara led Saint Anselm at the plate going 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. The Hawks put up seven total hits in game one.
-First year Samantha Hardwick (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East) falls to 0-1 in the circle for Assumption. She pitched six innings and struck out three batters.
-Senior Morgan Perry improved to 8-0 on the season as she pitched all seven innings for Saint Anselm and struck out 11 batters.
Game #2: Saint Anselm 7, Assumption 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hawks scored early in game two, putting up three hits and two runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Shannon Colson led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fitzpatrick. Colson crossed home when O'Hara continued her hot streak with an RBI double down the right field line (1-0). O'Hara advanced to third on a single to center by Klaiber, and after a walk for Washburn loaded the bases, O'Hara scored on an RBI single up the middle by senior Kat Stackrow (2-0).
-Saint Anselm added three more hits and three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Washburn earned two RBIs with a homer to left field that scored Klaiber (4-0). With two outs on the board, Thompson singled up the middle and came home on a double to left center by her classmate Abbie Murrell (5-0).
-The Hawks kept the bats going in the bottom of the fourth as they put up three hits and two more runs. With a pair of errors added to the scoreboard for the Hounds, Klaiber earned two RBIs with a single to left center that scored O'Hara and Fitzpatrick, unearned (7-0).
-Assumption posted two hits and got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth. With two outs and a third error on the board for the Hawks, Richards put senior Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy) in scoring position with a single up the middle. Bialakis came home, unearned, on a double to center field by first year Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass. / Abington). This was Mahan's second double of the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Mahan led the Hounds going 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. First year Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) also added a double in the setback. Assumption posted four hits in game two.
-Klaiber and Washburn led the Hawks at the plate in game two as the both finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Stackrow went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Saint Anselm finished game two with 11 total hits.
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) falls to 4-3 this season as she pitched three innings for the Hounds and struck out one batter.
-Senior Courtney Fisher improves to 3-2 in the circle for Saint Anselm. She pitched all seven innings, struck out one batter and did not allow an earned run scored.
UP NEXT
-Assumption is back in action on Thursday, April 15th when they travel to Southern N.H. for an NE10 doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
