-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team split a doubleheader with the Falcons of Bentley University on Sunday afternoon. Bentley did not allow the Hounds to score a run in game one, but Assumption used a seven-run fifth inning to lift them to victory in game two.
Game #1: Bentley 4, Assumption 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bentley scored three of their four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out on the board graduate student Stacey Korotsky started things off with a single. Junior Ella Hillier followed up with a triple that earned her an RBI when Korotsky crossed home (1-0). Sophomore Kaylee Mankins walked to put runners on first and third for the Falcons. An error by the Hounds scored both base runners for the 3-0 lead.
-The Falcons put up their fourth and final run of the game in the bottom of the second when senior Lindsey Allen earned an RBI with a single (4-0).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption tallied three hits in game one, led by senior Abigail Duggan (West Roxbury, Mass. / Mount Alvernia High School) who went 2-for-2 with one double.
-Bentley finished game one with five hits, led by Allen who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) falls to 4-4 in the circle this season for Assumption. She pitched 5.2 innings and struck out six batters.
-Junior Elise Pereira improves to 3-3 on the season as she pitched seven innings and struck out four batters for Bentley.
Game #2: Assumption 8, Bentley 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bentley scored first in game two in the bottom of the first inning. Allen led off with a single and moved into scoring position when Korotsky laid down a bunt. Allen crossed home on a ground out to shortstop and RBI by Mankins (1-0).
-Assumption tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth. Senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by her classmate, Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy). With the bases loaded, junior Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass. / Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) reached on a fielder's choice and earned an RBI when senior Mckenzie Richards (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East) crossed home (1-1).
-The Falcons pulled ahead in the bottom of the fourth with a two RBI triple to left field by Hillier (3-1).
-The Hounds exploded with seven runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. First year Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) led off with a single and sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) moved her to second with a single to third base. Senior Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H. / Salem High School) loaded the bases with a long single to left field. Beaton earned two RBIs with a double to left field that scored Larson and Dwyer (3-3). Bialakis earned an RBI with a bunt that scored Murphy for the lead (4-3). First year Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass. / Abington) used a sacrifice fly to left field to score Beaton for the two-run lead (5-3). Duggan walked in Assumption's sixth run of the inning and Dwyer singled to center to score Richards for the 8-3 advantage.
-Bentley got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when senior Lea Thompson homered to left field (8-4). Hillier led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple to center field and came home on an RBI ground-out to first by Mankins, but that is as close as the Falcons would come as Assumption clinched the 8-5 final victory in game two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Beaton led Assumption at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Dwyer finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored for the Hounds. Assumption finished game two with seven hits.
-Bentley was led by Hillier who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. The Falcons put up 11 hits in the setback.
-Junior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) earned the win in the circle for Assumption. She pitched all seven innings and struck out three batters to improve to 5-1 on the season.
-First year Payton Doiron falls to 3-3 as she went four innings for Bentley and struck out two batters.
UP NEXT
-Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 20th when they travel to Southern N.H. for an NE10 doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
