Softball Takes One in DH with SNHU

THE BASICS

-Score Game #1: Assumption University 8, Southern New Hampshire University 2

-Score Game #2: SNHU 6, Assumption 3

-Records: Assumption (10-8, NE10 10-8), SNHU (7-7, NE10 7-7)

-Location: Hooksett, N.H. (SNHU Softball Field)

-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team improved to 10-8 on the season with one victory over the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday evening. The Hounds took game one by a final score of 8-2, before falling in game two, 6-3.

Game #1: Assumption 8, SNHU 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Penmen put up their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and one runner on base, senior Emily Critch homered to left field for two RBIs and the early 2-0 lead.

-Assumption took over the lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. First year Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) led off with a walk and moved to second on a single to right field by senior Abigail Duggan (West Roxbury, Mass. / Mount Alvernia High School). Sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) loaded the bases when she walked and first year Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) walked in an RBI for the Hounds' first run of the game. Senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) gave Assumption the lead with a two RBI single to right field that sent Geremia and Dwyer across home plate (3-2).

-After three scoreless innings, Assumption put up five runs in the top of the seventh to take a comfortable 8-2 lead. Junior Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass. / Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) led off with a single to right field. Duggan reached on an error by the Penmen, and Dwyer earned an RBI with a single to second base (4-2). Duggan scored, unearned, before senior Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy) homered over the left field fence for three RBIs and the final 8-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Bialakis led the Hounds, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. The Hounds put up nine hits in game one, highlighted by a double from Sheerin and a homerun by Bialakis.

-Critch led SNHU at the plate going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Her homerun was one of two hits for the Penmen.

-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) earned the win in the circle for Assumption and improves to 5-4 on the season. She pitched all seven innings, struck out two batters and allowed just two hits and two runs scored.

-Senior Olivia Strasser falls to 1-5 on the season as she pitched seven innings and struck out four batters for the Penmen.

Game #2: SNHU 6, Assumption 3

HOW IT HAPPENED

-SNHU took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Chloe Griffin led off with a single to the pitcher and stole second. With two outs on the board, Critch earned an RBI with a single to left field that scored Griffin. Senior Jackie Gavin singled to right field to advance Critch to third and Senior Shay Sauvageau sent Critch home with a single to third base for the 2-0 lead.

-Assumption added a run in the top of the third when first year Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) scored on an RBI single to left field by Beaton (2-1). The tied the game with another run in the top of the fourth. Dwyer singled to shortstop foe an RBI when Duggan scored, unearned (2-2).

-SNHU pulled ahead 4-2 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Coralie Mathieu sent an RBI double to left field to score Sauvageau, unearned, and Griffin sent a sacrifice fly to right to score Mathieu.

-Larson led off the top of the sixth inning with a homerun to left center field to bring the Hounds within one, 4-3.

-The Penmen used two RBIs from first year, Shannon Gifford in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the 6-3 final victory. Her sacrifice fly to center field scored Griffin and her classmate, Bella Dickinson.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Dwyer led the Hounds at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Larson finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, and Bialakis added two hits for the Hounds. Assumption finished game two with eight total hits.

-Mathieu led SNHU going 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Gavin finished 2-for-3 and the Penmen posted 10 total hits in game two.

-Junior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) falls to 5-2 on the season as she pitched five innings and struck out two batters for Assumption.

-Griffin earned the win on the mound for SNHU. She pitched all seven innings and struck out one batter.

UP NEXT

-Assumption travels to Bentley for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 28th. First game is set for a 3:00 p.m. start.
