-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team improved to 11-9 on the season with one victory over the Falcons of Bentley on Wednesday afternoon. The Hounds took game one by a final score of 3-1 and lost the second game 1-0.
Game #1: Assumption 3, Bentley 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds started off hot with a leadoff triple by sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry). Senior Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H. / Salem High School) was able to push across Dwyer with a single. Assumption would continue to build their lead with senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) reaching on a fielder's choice. Beaton would score later on in the inning on an error by Bentley.
-Assumption added to their lead in the third inning with an inside-the-park homerun by Beaton. This was Beaton's third homerun of the season. Bentley would score their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Kaylee Mankins led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. Mankins would later score on a fielder's choice by sophomore Jordyn Needle.
-The game remained scoreless for the final three innings as junior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) would keep the Falcons scoreless. First-year Samantha Hardwick (Albany, N.Y. / Shaker) pitched the final frame and earned the save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Beaton led the Hounds, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI and one run scored. Murphy also contributed at the plate, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two BBs.
-First-year Sabrina Grizzafi led Bentley at the plate going 3-for-3. Needle would push across the run for the Falcons with her fielder's choice in the fourth inning.
-Barry earned the win in the circle for Assumption and improves to 6-2 on the season. She pitched six innings, struck out two batters, and allowed just one run to score. Hardwick picked up her first save of the season.
-Junior Elise Pereira falls to 3-6 on the season as she pitched seven innings and struck out four batters for the Falcons
Game #2: Bentley 1, Assumption 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The second game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel between Assumption's Mia Patriacca (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) and Bentley's Payton Doiron. The only run in the game would be scored in the bottom of the fourth inning.
-Sophomore Kaylee Mankins started the bottom of the fourth innings with a triple for the Falcons. Junior Ella Hillier would push across Mankins with a single of her own.
-The Hounds would come close in the top of the sixth inning as Dwyer would reach on an error and would move to second on a SAC bunt by Murphy. Dwyer would then move to third on a wild pitch but that is as far as she would get as she got caught stealing home.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Freshman Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass., Abington) would get the only hit for the Hounds going 1-3 in the second game. Beaton would also walk twice in the game.
-Hillier led Bentley going 1-for-3 with the lone RBI of the game. The Falcons posted only 3 three total hits in game two.
-Patriacca fell to 0-2 on the season as she pitched five innings and struck out one batter for Assumption while only allowing three hits.
-Doiron earned the win on the mound for SNHU. She pitched all seven innings and struck out six batters.
UP NEXT
-Assumption hosts Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday, May 1st. The first game is set for a 3:00 p.m. start.
