-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team defeated the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University in a conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon. Junior pitcher, Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) held the visitors to just one hit over the first seven innings of the day and first year Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass. / Abington) posted a two-run homer in game two to lift the Hounds to victory.
Game #1: Assumption 2, Franklin Pierce 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Assumption got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning when first year Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) earned an RBI with a double to left field that scored Mahan.
-The Ravens tied the game in the top of the of the third. Senior Jenna Curtis walked and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Junior Mariah Lopez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Curtis to third and she eventually crossed home on an error by the Hounds (1-1).
-Assumption added another run in the bottom of the third to take the 2-1 lead. Senior Mckenzie Richards (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East) singled to left field and her classmate, Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy) sent her home with an RBI single through the right side.
-Franklin Pierce put up their first hit of the game in the top of the seventh. Assumption wrapped up the game with a double play and secured the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Barry did not allow a hit through six innings on the mound for the Hounds. She improves to 2-1 on the season as she pitched all seven innings, struck out four batters and allowed just one hit and one run scored.
-Assumption finished game one with five hits. Bialakis and Sheerin led the Hounds going 1-for-3 with one RBI each.
-Sophomore Ari Rodriguez posted the Raven's only hit of game one.
-First year Sabrina Gonzalez falls to 0-3 on the season. She pitched four innings for the Ravens and struck out two batters.
Game#2: Assumption 2, Franklin Pierce 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Franklin Pierce got things rolling in the top of the second inning when senior Gina Hinckley homered to center field for the 1-0 lead.
-After a scoreless 3.5 innnings, the Hounds got their bats going in the bottom of the sixth. Bialakis got on base with a single to right field and first year Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) came in to pinch run. With two outs on the board Mahan sent her two-run homerun over the left field fence for the 2-1 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Mahan led the Hounds at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Assumption finished game two with six total hits.
-Hinckley led the Ravens going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Franklin Pierce put up seven hits in game two.
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynnn) pitched all seven innings for Assumption and improves to 2-1 this season. She struck out three batters in the victory.
-Senior Cyrena Zemaitis falls to 5-1 this season. She came in to pitch the final four innings for the Ravens, struck out five batters, allowed three hits and two runs scored.
