-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team fell to the Hawks of Saint Anselm College in a pair of NE10 contests on Wednesday evening. The Hounds fell 3-0 in game one and the Hawks ran away with eight runs in game two to secure the sweep.
Game #1: Saint Anselm 3, Assumption 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Saint Anselm put a run up in the bottom of the first inning. With one out on the board junior Bre Klaiber doubled down the right field line to put sophomore Kylie Fitzpatrick on third. Fitzpatrick came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Lauren Washburn (1-0).
-After a scoreless 5 and a half innings the Hawks put up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Abbie Murell doubled to left center and first year Brianna Belisle came in to pinch run. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the Hounds. Sophomore Jess Persechino sent an RBI single up the middle that scored first year, Gracie O'Hara for the final run of the game, 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Seniors Abigail Duggan (West Roxbury, Mass. / Mount Alvernia High School) and McKenzie Richards (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston High School East), along with first year Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I. / LaSalle Academy) recorded hits for the Hounds.
-The Hawks finished with six hits from six different players. Washburn and Persechino both went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
-Junior Mia Patriacca (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) pitched 5.1 innings for Assumption. She falls to 0-1 on the season.
-Senior Morgan Perry pitched all seven innings for Saint Anselm, struck out 15 batters, and allowed just three hits. She improves to 5-0 on the season.
Game #2: Saint Anselm 8, Assumption 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption put an early run on the scoreboard in the top of the first. With two outs, senior Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) walked and advanced to third on a single to center field by her classmate, Alyssa Bialakis (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. John Paul II Academy). First year Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass. / Abington) sent an RBI single to left field to score Beaton for the 1-0 lead.
-The Hawks put up two runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Bailey Cain singled through the left side to score Fitzpatick and Cane came home on a passed ball (2-1).
-Saint Anselm pulled ahead by five, adding four more runs from a grand slam by Klaiber in the bottom of the fourth (6-1).
-Fitzpatrick homered to left field in the bottom of the fifth for the 7-1 lead.
-Assumption got one run back in the top of the sixth. Richards singled to left field and moved to second on a single to right by Beaton. With two outs, Mahan singled through the left side to move Beaton and Richards to second and third respectively. First year, Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) earned an RBI with a single to second that scored Richards (7-2).
-Saint Anselm put up the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Erin Thompson earned an RBI with a single up the middle that scored her classmate, Shannon Colson for the 8-2 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Mahan led Assumption at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Bialakis finished 2-for-3 and Sheerin went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
-Saint Anselm finished with nine hits on the day while Assumption put up seven. Klaiber led the Hawks with four RBIs. Fitzpatrick finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored.
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn) falls to 2-2 in the circle for the Hounds. She pitched four innings and struck out five batters in the setback.
-Sophomore McKenna Smith improves to 2-0 as she pitched all seven innings for the Hawks and struck out seven batters.
