-The Lead: The Assumption University softball team slipped by the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Tuesday afternoon. The Hounds move on to the Divisional Semifinals at Franklin Pierce on Thursday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption scored the lone run of the game in the very first inning. Sophomore Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) led off with a single to right field and advanced into scoring position on an error by the Purple Knights. Senior Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H. / Salem High School ) earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Dwyer for the 1-0 edge.
-The next three and a half innings did not see a hit and only saw one base runner, on a walk by Saint Michael's sophomore Hannah Arruda. The visitors posted their first hit of the game in the top of the fifth with a single to center field. Sophomore Sadie Pratt got as far as third base before the Hounds secured the third out and left her stranded.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption finished with four hits in the victory from Dwyer, Murphy and seniors Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I. / Smithfield High School) and Abigail Duggan (West Roxbury, Mass. / Mount Alvernia High School).
-Saint Michael's recorded two hits in the loss, one from Pratt and one from Arruda.
-Senior Mia Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass. / St. Marys Lynn ) pitched a complete game for Assumption and improves to a 7-4 record on the season. She struck out three batters and allowed just two hits.
-Sophomore Jackie Cherry falls to 4-12 in the circle for the Purple Knights. She pitched all six innings and struck out one batter.
