-The Lead: The Assumption University women's soccer team kicked off the 2021 season with a 2-0 victory over No. 16 Holy Family in a non-conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. This was Coach Warner's first collegiate win as a head coach.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After a scoreless first half of play, the Hounds opened up scoring seven minutes into the second period with a goal by senior Dianna Bruggeman (Natick, Mass. / Natick). After a shot by sophomore Micaela Robinson (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) was deflected by Holy Family goalkeeper, Alayna McSeed, sophomore Chelsea Hoey (West Springfield, Mass. / West Springfield) picked up the loose ball and found Bruggeman who scored for the 1-0 lead.
-With 10 minutes to go in the game, Assumption tacked on an insurance goal as senior Carly Sevigny (Swansea, Mass. / Bishop Stang) tallied her first collegiate goal from 30 yards out for the 2-0 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-First year Julia Walsh (San Diego, Calif.) earned her first career shutout in net for the Hounds and improves to 1-0 on the season.
-McSeed made three saves in the setback and falls to 0-1 on the season.
-Assumption outshot Holy Family 9-3. Holy Family was awarded 10 corner kicks to Assumption's one.
